I am looking at a Seal laminator with a heat assist function demo model. Retail it goes for $8,600. I can get it for $8,000. I was just wondering if this was a good deal on this laminator.
If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

Does it come with a full warrenty? I think you should get a better discount.

Full warranty and if I want the Seal rep to train me, his cost is $400.
seems pricey.

Which model? That price is high if it is the Base 54.

it is the 54 Base. The thing I like about it is the heat assist on the main roller. I seems to help make the laminating process go a bit smoother.

I just orded a brand new Base 54 for much less than $8000. Call Gina Springs at Grimco and see what she can do for you.
Do you "need" a hot lam? I have a seal Ultra 44" hot lam and I end up not using the heat ever.
I also just got a 60" cold lam for under 3k. Works great with very few parts.

Doesn't seem like a very good price to me. I have a 60" cold laminator and it was only $2000 or $2500. It's pretty basic, but so far so good! I've never had the need for heat that I'm aware of. If I were you and had the space, I'd buy two or three of these cheaper ones. I'd have two of them loaded with different laminates (i.e. Oracal 210 intermediate for most stuff and 3M 8519 for wraps and long term) and I'd use one strictly for mounting. Sheesh, for what I paid for mine, you could buy 4 of these cheap ones for what you're currently looking at!

Did you get your 60" from John at PCP? Mine was 2500 + Shipping
While down at the Atlantic City sign show, everybody was telling me how important it is to have a heat assisted cold laminator. After showing my ignorance of the fact of… why have a cold laminator if you need a heated roller assistant … they said this added feature stops ‘Silvering’ [??] when applying laminate to the vinyl. Duh, I never heard of that. I thought that is what you put on the back of mirrors when they went bad. :help:
After I questioned almost every rep at the show demonstrating laminators… a friend of mine that sells them told me, it’s not really needed at all. The ‘Silvering’ is a term for small bubbles that get in between the lam and the vinyl when starting it. 90% of it goes away while you put the vinyl on the vehicles. The rest of it goes away in a day or two. Who really cares if you see some minute bubbles that are going to go away eventually ??
Sounds like the same thing we tell customers if there are a few bubbles in the application. Ah, yeah Mrs. Jones, the sun will take care of those bubbles… and sure enough they go away.
I’m looking at a ‘Royal Sovereign’. It also has a heat-assisted roller, but I might get the one without it. I just want to be able to put 4’ x 8’s through it without a hitch. We just did 12pcs. 4’ x 8’ x ¾” 2-sided this week. It took about 1 minute to line the vinyl up and about 3 or 4 minutes to actually put the vinyl on the board. Another 2 or 3 minutes to move that board out and set up the next. We had all of the panels finished in about 5 hours total because of interruptions. Delivered them this morning and got the check already. :unclesam:

Did you get your 60" from John at PCP? Mine was 2500 + Shipping
Yes, I think they gave me mine for $2000 because I was first on the list and it took them way longer to get me mine than originally anticipated. I also did not pay for shipping as they brought it to me along with other people's deliveries in the area. I have since modified mine some with some different brackets. I didn't like how the laminate and carrier paper was positioned, so I designed up some "L" shaped ones and had a machine-shop make them for me. The new ones also hold a rod for the laminate backing paper. It is still a manual process of rolling it up as I go, but at least now it is better than it was. Since it is a better design, they considered having me make up some for them to sell, but the cost to produce was really too high for them to make a profit.
FYI, the brand is DingTec...Chinese as you might expect. They have a heated model with take-up rollers, I think it was $5000 or $6000 for that model.
When I've got my Seal's heat on I still get Silvering, just not as much.
I hand laminated a small print and it had a mess of Silvering but the Silvering went away in one hour in the hot sun.
The laminator I have I believe to be the same as the ones SW is selling for 5k just relabeled as an EnduroLam.
I can lam up to I think 1" or 1-1/2" .. I have never needed to go over 1/2" yet.

DAMN! Mine didn't come like that! I'm gonna call 'em to see if mine can be retrofitted with that.
Just called John, looks like they have a update kit for like $180! Thanks for posting as I would have never known that this was available! Cool deal.

so,
the whole "silvering" thing will just go away eventually? I think a cold Lam might be the best way to go. Need a 54" one. I am in Cleveland if anyone knows who sells a good machine.
I have also heard it's good to get one with a foot control.
thanks for everyone's help.

Derf-
So, if yours HAS that stuff already (the laminate tensioner and such), how do you like it so far? Mine works pretty well now, but I also had to make up a half-baked means of applying some tension to the laminate roll. What I'm currently using is some spring clamps from Home Depot, happen to be the right size to go around the roll holder tube. I then put in a bolt thru the bracket that the clamp can bear against as the friction from the clamp against the bolt applies some tension to the roll. It works, but kinda cheesy. I'll post some pix later of what I've got cobbled up here.
James2... this 60" cold lam is great ---> http://www.pacificcoastsignsupply.com/catalog/Laminating_Equipment.htm
Shipping is only like $300 maybe more out there. You can't beat the price!
GraphiXtreme ... you will need to post a pick or email me a pick because I have no clue how that would work?
So far so good. I just wrench down on the screws on each end at the top! Seems to work good so far.

Derf,
Another question...mine came only with the main red roller and the two roll holders with one common bracket. Looks like this new one has some kind of bar in front of the roller, another just behind and a little above, and the laminate roll holder up high and behind...is this the case or am I seeing things in the photo? I'm trying to envision what this "update" kit will look like to go on my machine, since there are no provisions on mine for these smaller-looking front/back rollers...are those powered at all or just along for the ride?
One Red roller? Mine came with two Big red Solid rubber rolls! One top one bottom and four take up and Film rolls

derf,
for vehicle graphics and other basic sign needs, do you like th ZJX or C11?
thx
I have never used the ZJX but it is a more user friendly laminator.
If you got the 5k to drop then the ZJX is the way to go. If it was available 6 months ago I would have gotten that one instead.
I may get it next year and use the CII for taping and mounting.

12-21-2006, 06:03 PM
The pressure on that CII is adjusted through the knobs on either end of the unit...above the roller?? I think I used one similar to that...the fact you had to adjust each knob seperately made it difficult to get even pressures across for lamination or mounting. I think the ZJX doesnt look too bad. Anyone know about Ledco laminators? they have a 60" one for around 5k as well.

If anybody is interested (or needs), we can get units similar to the Enduralam (62 inch) for $4000. They use a single point chain-driven height adjustment (not dual knobs), variable speed, etc. etc.
I will get a picture better tomorrow if anybody wants.
Here are the specs:

Showing someone how the laminator works, $400.00 huh? Isn't that supposed to be in the purchase price? Seems high, unless he has to travel a great distance to your shop.
Damn for free I'll tell you!

How does the vinyl go in...face up or down? Or does that depend on the quantity of beers weve drunk at that point?:Big Laugh

On the hot/cold issue, our sales rep told us NOT to use heat. Said the inks we use aren't made for it (eco-sol max from Roland).
That said, we're looking at a Ledco for about $7k. It's actually less than that cause of some discounts they're throwing in on a package deal with an XC-540. Whole thing's gonna be about $37k for the printer, laminator, 12 ink carts, 2 rolls of media and 2 rolls of lam, shipped and installed. Didn't figure that was too bad.

I bought a seal 62 image plus, both rolls are heated has take up real and two feed rolls, bought mine used for 3500.00 and it works great, I would look for a used machine and get a good one, I have heard that the seal ultra is a peice of crap... and so is the base (this is not my opion I have never used them) but if you are going to spend 5,000.00 why not get a better machine and spend less??? on ebay right now there is a seal 60or 62 made in 2005 at 1000.00 last I checked, take a trip to texas pick it up and you will be money ahead, these machines are easy to work on all you need are basic hand tools and a volt meter a little patience and you are in business....I find it beneficial to know how to set up all my machines from my printer, plotter, laminator, computer, etc... the more you know the less you have to depend on others to help you... not that you can't get help here.
just my opinion ......Chopper

Here are the pix of the mods I made to mine. I just got an "update" kit, but I am not too impressed with how it came. First off, mine does not have the provisions to locate these new parts, and second, there are no directions, measurements or pictures of how to locate these things. Sure, I can guess, but that's all it would be. So, I've got PCSS looking into getting me that info. By the looks of it, I have in essence already accomplished what they've done, but mine is a bit cruder in application.
I designed the silver brackets and had a machine shop make them for me. Also, I now use a 3" core on the second rod there for a manual liner take up.

GraphiXtreme,
What kind of setup do you have on your application tape dispensor? Looks like you've modified it and made it stationary? I cant tell for sure by the pic... I have one but I find it useless. Care to share, maybe Ill drag mine out and get some use out of it finally.

Oooo, you are a sharp one, eh? I didn't even notice that in the pic. All I did was put a piece of 1"x2". For the fastener thru, I removed the fastener that attaches the 4 feet underside and used a wood screw thru the aluminum base, the feet and then into the 1x2. This moves the base up a bit to make it more usable, and then gives a place to clamp to onto the table.
I made my own at first, but I like this one a lot now with this simple mod, and use it all the time now.

THX!My 64" laminator squeegees sell for $160. It's nice to have a shorter one around to do those small jobs. Even if you have a laminator, the Big Squeegee can save you both time and materials. I have customers that use them for mounting and laminating on 4' X 8' panels.
