Ok my business partner went to lunch with a friend. Sitting at the restrauant and see's this commercial for a sign company. It was for vehicle wraps starting at $999 (couldn't see the name) But in any event there is this guy standing there on a scaffold with tape on his chest. He takes the printed roll of vinyl and walks around the car and tapes it down. Next thing you know, these huge heaters come out and SKRINK WRAP the vinyl to the car. Perfect, no squeegeeing etc., nada..! Has anyone see or heard of this..?

I'll believe it when I see it. I'm not questioning you TVG, but does anyone think this would work?

They do have something like what you mentioned, but only it is jetted right onto the truck almost like them car washes. But they are not cheap, last time I saw one was a few years ago over in europe I was told it cost a couple million.

My logic tells me that it would only be possible with a heat activated adhesive on the film ... which is a long used technology for road signs.

That machine would have come in handy today.. I feel like I am almost blind from doing a wrap today.. =)

not to stray off topic, but by them advertising on TV doesn't it contradict the wraps being more cost effective then using the TV for advertisement  . Was it possible that the commercial used a little movie magic on this wrap?

I think I read something about "shrink-wrapped" vehicle graphics several years ago. However, I would say that we're probably deaing with some mis-information. If you search for shrink wrap vehicle graphics, you'll see that some web sites are describing the graphic wrapss as "shrink-wrap". Also, if an outsider was watching a wrap installer using heat on a graphic, he would probably assume it was a shrink-wrap too.
Also, here's what chicago may be talking about? It's a printer that will print right to a vehicle.

And, supposedly, there are videos here...

But I didn't bother trying to download them.

yes movie magic ..would be nearly impossable to wrap even with printed wrap all around the heat it and bam it's done perfect even pieces because of the changes shrink wrap goes through .. then in the sun it shrinks more
lol lol lol good commercial to make sign work wraps look simple lol lol lol

Maybe they found a way to do this without dropping the vehicle into a tub of water:

I saw this on one of the learning (or hunting) channels and the results looked really good.
It was all smaller stuff - rifle stocks - bows etc...

Just checked on the robopainter, there is one for sale on eBay right now for 46K !! Looks cool but what about support, cost, guarantee on the print and finish
I will stick to vinyl wraps (for now)

Sounds more like a good marketing idea. Most people don't care how a wrap is done.

Kinda like those cracker commercials with the kids imagining how they get all the cheese taste in the crackers.

Had a family friend visiting from Naples, Florida not to long ago and he was talking about how he watched a vehicle get "shrink wrapped"...I then automatically thought "vehicle wrap" and started explaining the concept to him, but he said "no, I watched a vehicle literally get shrink wrapped" My mind was boggled and then today I stumbled upon this thread! So "shrink wrapping" does exist does anybody know any details?

I have a cousin who is very into Nascar, he too told me they "shrink wrap" those vehicles. He also insisted it was done with heat and all at one time, not with panels like a typical wrap I'm familiar with. He says saw it on TV. I'm assuming it must exist somewhere, somehow...

To this day I have not or my business partner seen this commercial. But basically it works just like shrink tubing would for electrical wiring. The car is covered with one solid piece of vinyl and these large heaters go around the car and the vinyl literally shrink wraps around the vehicle...
