Similar techniques have been used by aerial advertisers since the late seventies/early eighties. Check it out: http://sky-writing.com/ They use planes and a computer to he smoke fluid injectors.

I agree the machine itself is kind of neat because it works w/ text messaging. "Thanks for sharing OP"
On a side note / non political:
I also think any negative message on a busy sidewalk would be deliberately swiped away with someone's foot in about 10 seconds making it illegible so I think this guy is really wasting his time. I also don't see any advertising value in the machine either IMHO.
