Wasatch now, previously sig labs p&c manager.

Wasatch came with our grenadier 2,

not pretty but certainly functional.

no experience of onyx.

Onyx, because I won't settle for anything less than the best.

Scotty, that's only because your bro works there! What kind of back end bonuses do you get for that kind of response! =0)

I've bounced between both, but have settled on Wasatch 6.1 the last year or so. First off, their interface is much more user-friendly than Onyx in my opinion. Onyx is so cludgy between Preflight, Media Manager, etc, etc. Also, the cost of Wasatch is much more affordable ($2,995 to $4,995) and supports a good number of popular printers, cutters, etc. Also, in terms of color management, Wasatch is the only RIP with 16 bit rendering for uncomparable quality and their profiling process is much more robust and stable than Onyx. I've had excellent luck with customer service from both companies, but I just prefer Wasatch more for what it's worth. Scotty, don't kill me! =0)

I saw some info on Wasatch's new 16 bit rendering also - does it make any difference in prints? For the money it's hard to compete with Wasatch's 1k small format edition (i have a 30" mimaki). I would use Flexi-sign exclusively, if they had better in the box profiles, they win hands down for ease of use, and also because print and cut ease.

It makes a big difference...especially in your gradients and highlight & shadow areas. It allows a more smooth transition without any banding and is really quite nice in photographic output. They do have some good price points on exclusive editions, very hard to turn down...

I'm using Rolands ColorRip II for the SolJet which I believe is Wasatch and using Onyx for the ColorSpan. They both do the job which is all I care about.

And why?

Where's the both option?

I have both. I prefer Wasatch. It's faster and while it may not look as pretty it really is a better product with regard to getting the work out. I have Onyx because at one time Wasatch didn't support one of my printers. If it wasn't for this reason the product wouldn't be here.

I'm biased...I know. Other than direct line to the developers on issues there's no kick back coming to me. I'm honestly just a HUGE fan, though I have my issues as well. I can't knock Wasatch by any means as I haven't used their product, but their UI is definitely far superior imho. I've been compaining about the UI since day 1.

Onyx. It was part of the printer/cutter/laminator package. I like the control of the profiles, but the contour cut feature is LAAAAAME! What's with the 64 digit barcode, anyway...? :help:

Also, it crashes about every 4th time I click 'Print Now'. I have never used Wasatch, so I can't compare the two from experience.

We have both, we use Onyx for more of our overall workflow and Wasatch with our HP 9000s & 10000s

Had Onyx, ok but a pain to use. Signlab p&c is working excellent on my seiko. I use only two profiles for all media (both 3m profiles) and color stays the same on all media. What's on the screen is what prints. Couldn't be happier.

What's lame about it? I don't have problems with it and use it on a daily basis.

Outlining every cut in a named color, CRASHING, CRASHING, CRASHING. Once in a while, it just stops working, it hangs, It's trash. Every time I call tech support I get, Well I have never seen that before....... Bull.

Postershop crashing at the end of a print and not making the cut file, would you like me to go on?

Yes I would...my brother is the lead engineer at Onyx. I'll pass your issues directly on to him. CutServer was his baby, so he knows it intimately.

What version are you running?

Call wasatch, they should have a print driver.

I would recommend Ciberprint. It is a rip and cut program. For design adobe.

I looked on their site....they dont list them as being supported. Considering EFI now owns Vutek...I can understand why.
