I'm new to this board, and new to large format printing as well. I am trying to print signs on an HP Designjet 5500 PS using Flexi-sign Pro version 7.0 (i know, it's outdated). However, my bitmap and jpeg graphics do not print anywhere close to what I see on my screen. I am totally clueless about this, so any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Shannon

The Eye-One or any other color profiling gadgets will help you set up your monitor and printer (and even your scanner and digi cam); and can even help you match specific colors instead of guesstimating with your pantone swatch. Another good habit to get into is to always remember to check what your soft proof looks like before sending to printer. Sometimes (actually most the time) when I have something that has a lot of colors, i'll print out a smaller version just to make sure i've hit the colors right. Also, do as much research as you can into color modes, why they are, what they do better than each other and you'll begin to understand a little better what happens between you, your monitor, your machine, and your output device.

Be sure and enable "softproof" under Flexi's "view" options. More than likely you are having profile issues, under color setting in the advanced RIP tab, is your bitmap set to "perceptual"? Is the "color correction" check mark on?

Shannon,

The postscript RIP onboard in the printer should help with your color correction. If you go under your printer preferences in Windows, make sure "ICM Handled by Printer" is on. That will ensure that your file will be interpreted by the postscript RIP rather than your application software. While not perfect, the PS RIP does good work, especially through Flexi. You can PM or email me for more detailed instructions if necessary.
