I want to practice on my car so that I can put vehicle graphics to the lisst of things I do..This may be a stupid question but is viynl on the car permant or leave behind a residue on the painted part?
I know I was messing around with some reflective when i made my bro magnets and i put it down then lifted it to reposition and it left a residue...actually lifted the silver part off the viynl.

Vinyl is not forever.
A little gasoline will usually take off the glue residue.

reflective is NOT re-positionable, its a one shot deal, then a lot of thinks count like temp contrloed room, material brand etc...

3M adhesive remomver is the best
Vinyl is never permanent. It's vinyl.
After a while the paint on a vehicle (or any surface) will fade. When the vinyl is removed you may notice that the paint behind the vinyl did not fade as much, and therefore leaves a noticable difference in paint color.
Rapid Remover from Rapidtac.com will get rid of the glue residue, same with "Goo-Gone"..but it's always a messy thing to do.
Reflective material is notorious for removal problems because it is a multi-layered material.
A heat gun or hair drier really helps to soften the adhesive to help in removal of old vinyl.

There are several "grades" of vinyl, each with different characteristics.
I'm too lazy to look it up, but I think 3M offers these characteristics...
Repositionable vinyl can be removed and repositioned without any adhesive residue left behind.
Removable vinyl leaves less than 30% of the adheasive behind if removed within a specified time period.
Permanent vinyl requires a lot of effort to remove and expect that more than 70% of the ahdeasive residue to be left, once the vinyl is removed.

Yellowmack,
If you are applying it, and then taking it of within a short amount of time, (say a day or so), with the most common vinyls I have found that a hair dryer should get it off without leaving much of the the adhesive behind.
I have not worked with reflective vinyl, and from what the others say here, they seem like a problem.

Wax your car before you practice on it. It'll make the removal easier.

"not all reflective is repositionable" would be more accurate.

Goo Gone,, sux,, IT really sux. I just unwrapped a trailer and tried a few of the mentioned removers.. Removed some prints and some vinil letttering. Why did I test a fwe of those different removers? Because I have some of the mentioned removers here.
Took all day as expected.
Lighter fluid works but is nasty and could start a fire.
Gas works but is the same as above.
Citrus based cleaners sux..
Goo Gone sux.
3M remover works good but will also remove your skin or the cars skin (paint)
Rapid remover by far is the most consistent product. Spray a 2'x2' area.. let set and scrap away all the snot. While scraping that spot spray the next area. Still slow by any means.

it all depends on how long it has been on for. and i had removed some vinyl that the customer said he put on 5 months ago and it was an all day project removing it. but i had vinyl that had been on for a year and removed easily with a heat gun. if you put it on you ride and going to change it up like every 6 months you really shouldn't have to much of a problem removing it the stuff that sucks like mentioned above is reflective and foils my advice for putting reflective on is that you use regular vinyl for a backing then apply the reflective on top (make Lil bit easier to remove) . sorry if this info was already mentioned
