View Full Version : Avery - reassurance that it still sucks.

A short, quick history first:

I started working for the shop about two years ago. This job was done before I did research about decent vinyls to us. I found out Avery vinyl sucks for certain applications. I've switched everything to Oracal 651 for most of our work and HP for the vehicles a year ago.

We did this job before the Oracal switch, using Avery 6 (oh dear) and not a digital print (which we're capable of doing now). Look at the shrinkage! Look at the rippage!

Here's the kicker: The owner here suggested to me just only replace the vinyl that's coming up and torn. Well, the rest of the vinyl looks like crap and I'd rather replace all the graphics.

Yes Avery sux, but I wouldn't use the A6 on a vehicle. The better bet would be A7 or Oracal751. I know somepeople say A6 is ok, but persoanally, unless it was on Glass, one color, no layers, I'd probably stay away. Spend a little more on the vinyl, and save on the headaches.

Good Luck

That is not a failure of the vinyl. That is the tenting of the vinyl because a6 is a calandered product and will always spring back to original shape. A6 is a short term product not meant to go over valleys and rivets. This is not Avery's fault.

Not entirely Avery's fault. Some of the Oracal 651 series vinyl we applied last year on a vehicle didn't shrink by 1/8" (like in that picture) or even not at all.

Calandered vinyl shrinks. Thats a fact of life. How much? All I can say is it shrinks some. It will shrink more if the applicator tech stretches the vinyl when he installs. Yes that is possible.

I observed techs applying vinyl with the loose end almost verticle when he squeeges. Sometimes it stretches so much the vinyl will have a wrinkle.. That is guaranteed to stretch the vinyl and it is guaranted to shrink back a lot.

Yes, Avery is getting some heat and blame because they blew it. However, not all problems are Avery's fault.

Using calandered vinyl on a vehicle in layers over rivets and deep valleys is a good way to have a failure no matter who made the vinyl.

That pic shows tenting failure. IT is not showing shrinkage cause by vinyl failure..

I am with tech on this... Cal is not made for this type application. It has a memory and will "pop" back to its original form... I use 651 on vehicles, glass etc. However, I do not use it for valleys and rivets etc...

I'm with Tech on this as well,

We've been using the A9 series ever sense Avery got rid of the A8 and we haven't had any problems with shrinkage or cracking sense.

I would stay away from using any Intermediate or calendered vinyls for vehicle lettering, especially when overlapping or going over bends and crevices. High performance is a good way to go....
