I have now moved all my media about 3000 times, well not really.
I can't figure the best way to store this stuff and have it accessible too.
I am use to 24 and 30 rolls of vinyl. Not 54" rolls of everything.

Any tips on what not to do would be great.

Thanks
Ronda

I don't know if 54" rolls will work on that or not. We've never tried it, but we use the big floor racks that stand the media upright. We only have room for one, and it's been full for awhile, so we've been using the square end pieces that come in the shipping box, and sticking the roll back onto those.

Those wall racks are nice, but you’ll soon be bumping into everything once you get your inventory up and running. If they’re too high, you’ll never be able to put them back or take them off without the help of a gorilla. If they’re too low…. everyone will be tripping over them. We simply store them on end; close by the printer with the biggest and most common ones the closest. Most of our media starts out as 54” x 150’ and that’s a lot of weight…. be careful.

For 24" rolls, I have those wall mounted with the racks. For larger rolls (38" and 54" vinyl and banner media), I stand them up vertically on the floor using the plastic media holders that come in the box.

This is what I do as well.

Thank you! that is what I will do too. Gino, you are right, they can get a little heavy.

I started with one of the floor racks on wheels. At around $225 I was not thrilled with the price, but I am an organizational junkie & I do think that time (and risk of damage) saved from good organization will eventually offset the costs in time & money, to implement good organization.

The first floor rack was filled immediately & the second was ordered fairly quickly thereafter. (I also bought a third floor rack that resides upstairs by my laminator) Later I even knocked out a wall & put in a new dropped ceiling & some tile to end up with my media exactly where I needed it. It happened to be a glorified broom closet getting very little use before the renovation, so it was a huge gain, with very little sacrifice, except for hundreds of dollars & the short down time with my equipment moved & plastic dustproofing hanging from the ceiling. Now it looks like this:

I have the wall racks but I modified them, I took a peice fo sheet metal the same width as the rack and broke the metal (bent) in the shape of a z to make it fit into slat board, and welded them to the wall rack... then I lined my closet from top to bottom with slat board so I can move and change the closet as I see fit and as my needs change all the shelves in there are also mounted to the slat board this works great, but the largest material I use at this time is 30" when I go 54 I will have change my set up for the larger rolls//chopper

storing vinyl ...vertical is best ... weight of vinyl has less chance of molding paper backing, during temperature changes etc. larger rolls this becomes more important
how easy ya make on yourself is another story

We also store it vertically on one of those rolling floor racks. The important thing is to keep the rolls dust free so we keep them covered with the plastic bags they come in. Then, we write "54 INCH CAST" or "54 INCH CAL" (etc.) on a strip of masking tape and stick it to the plastic bag. That way, we can see at a glance what each roll is.

Definitely not in your shop! Your shop looks so pristine. Our shop is always dusty because we keep the doors open so we have to protect our vinyl.

We store them in the original box/end pieces, underneath one of the work tables. Holds about 10 54" rolls, and 6 30" rolls nicely. It's only ever a pain when the 54 inchers are new, those are heavy rolls! At least for us here, we tend to run in the short side or people. 5' 7" being the tallest =X

hahahaha... I was just joking around of course, although I do take pride in having a rather clean shop... it does get dusty, which is why you can see some dust bags still on my less frequently used media. I finally gave up keeping bags on the stuff I use every other day though.

We store our media vertically, also. To prevent contamination and promote easy handling I use reverse-wound media. I highly recommend it.
