Hey All,
I've got a question about mounting MDO signs to an exterior wall.
Other than just bolting it straight to the wall what's the best way. I'm thinking of the french cleat but I'm not sure if it's a good idea for a large outdoor MDO sign. Will it blow off the wall in a good wind?
What's the best/easiest way that won't show big bolts?
Thanks in advance for any help.

What type of wall are you mounting to?

It's a stucco wall.

We sometimes use L Brackets made from .080 aluminum
Fasten them to the wall then screws into the side of the plywood.
french cleat is fine, as long as they are big enough, and usually one top and bottom. I like to put one or two smal screws thru the face to lock them down.

Many ways to do it....If you like to get a little dimension to it and have it stand off some, I'd Lag bolt backer boards ( P.T. ) to the wall, then I like to drill pilot holes through the sign( no need to counter sink ), then use Reisner screws ( there are other names for these. They are the gold colored screws that screw in with torx bits )
These screws are made to counter sink themselves. Screw them through the sign into the backer boards with the heads just flush with the substrate surface, then I make 1" round circles of vinyl same ( or close to )color as background and cover screw heads. This works slick for MDO....
You can do the same without backer boards even. I like the backer boards. It lets the sign breath and gives it some dimension too....

I was talking to my guys today about it and we came up with backer boards as well.
Thanks

If you use backer bds. be sure to recess your lag bolt heads into boards.

I applied a 4 x 8 omega board to very rough stone wall a while back.
I had to create a frame using 2x4s, mount that to the wall using
angle and screw the board to the frame.
Looked good.
