I got asked the other day if I thought a .net address is just as effective as a .com.
I answered that .nets was as recognized as a .com, considering the new domain extensions that they had to come out with, such as .info, .biz, etc., and it would only be a matter of time untill those get mainstream recognition.
It has got me thinking about it more and more, and I am wondering if I really belive the answer that I gave. What is your take on it?

I don't think it matters what [.] you have as long as people know how to find your [.]

I have a .net, my only issue is I have to stress the .net when it comes to my e-mail address. People assume .com.
Otherwise no problems here.

I think if you can't get .com you should choose another name in most cases. If you're using .net and someone else has the samename.com then a lot of folks looking for you are going to end up there.

.com = Commercial
.net = Network (Usually Internet Service Providers have these)
.org = Usually Non-Profit Organizations
.edu = Schools, Colleges & Universities
.mil = Military
.us = State based websites
If you are running a commercial business, try and go with the .com

I have a .ws and a .us and for 7 years I still get people saying they sent me the file to dave@signcrafters.com......
I put off getting signcrafters.com and ended up missing it by a few months.
.com still rules peoples memory......

Sadly, unless you are an ISP, .com rules.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

People *will* default to .com no matter how many times you tell them or how clear it is in your ads. If they see redhotsigns.net on the side of your truck, they will go home and type redhotsigns.com, guaranteed.

If the .com you want is taken, you would be *well* advised to choose another domain name.

That said, when you do register your desired .com, also register the .net and .org of the name.

In addition, if you buy one with a hyphen, say to match your existing business name (example: red-hotsigns.com) *always* buy the non-hyphenated version (redhotsigns.com) as well.

In some cases that can mean 6 domain names. May seem excessive but believe me you will be glad you paid the $36 a year instead of the 10K the other "owner" is asking if you want to buy it later. Been there, done that.

The worst part is, if you offend, you may find the name you now really want and your customers are mis-typing to pointed to a gay transvestite porn site.
