Hi, I need to make a burgundy color MDO sign, I will have to paint it.
Is One Shot paint a good choice? Should I buy white painted MDO and paint it over or I better get primed unpainted MDO? (looking for the best result, not to save a $ or two)
Thanks!

buy primed MDO, lightly scuff sand it. wipe off all sanding dust, posibly with a damp cloth first. Immediately before painting, use tack rag to remove all dust, & paint in a dust free area as much as possible. Use a foam roller, & remember... too much paint will spoil the look just as much as not enough.

I always just painted with the yellow tiz rollers with Benj Moore oil based Impervo. No primer...just put one coat on...fill gaps in on edges and sand lightly...then put another coat on and let dry overnight.

If you want an improved gloss, use the pre-finished M.D.O., Thoroughly scuff with a Scotchbrite pad, then paint with a foam roller etc., like Doug said....about too much/too little. Work fast and roll the width, then the length, multiple times, overlapping the roller path with each pass you make. Do this until the tiny bubbles have dissipated. As you do your last 1 or 2 complete passes over the entire board, lighten up on the weight or pressure you apply to the roller until the weight of the roller itself is all that is used. When done properly you can achieve an awesome and fairly quick drying finish (Quick as far as enamel goes). For some reason, Burgundy seams to be a slower drying color. :thumb: Good Luck!

really want a good paint on that.....USE ACRYLIC ENAMEL CAR PAINT WITH HARDNER!!!!!!! and spray it on 2 coats.
i do this with unpainted or primed ONLY BOARD.
the finish comes out like glass, in fl it dry to work on it 2-3 hours......AND THE PAINT WILL LAST LIKE IT DOES ON VEHICLES!!!!!!
I use vinyl now too because California paint sucks and if we get caught spraying auto paint with out a permit and proper VOC recovery systems in place we can get in big trouble!

Maroon Sign enamels are one of the worst drying I know of, so leave lots of time (and add hardener).

Preprimed MDO is what I've used & as they say scuff it up. I use 100 grit on my palm sander and round the edges while I'm at it (if your not using edge cap). I fill any voids with wood filler and prime the edges before painting it.
Maroons do seem to take longer to dry so several thin coats are better than a couple of gobbed on coats. A UV clear coat never hurts either.
I always used One Shot but have had great luck with Acrylic Enamels form our local Columbia Paint store. They cover well & last just as well. I don't have a place to spray paint so I always roll it on with the foam rollers.
Just don't rush it and seal up the edges well.
