Got a call today from another local shop who has contracted to wrap a mini cooper for a local Dunkin Donuts, the design was done by a third party, the printing will be done by yet another "third party" they called me to do the install since none of the above has any or enough experience to tackle the job..

A. What the christ do I charge them for this?
B. Should I pass?
C. Should I tell them Ill print it tomake sure it actually fits the car?

Have a looksie..

I say go with option "c" this way you can charge full price and you'll know that it will fit. Plus it will be on a material that your comfortable working with. Who knows what the other guy is going to print on!!! He may send you unlaminated calendered.

It's apparent that there are too many hands on this job. I would either print it myself and install at full price, or walk. There's no way I would lower my price due to the fact that everyone wants to make money on it!

Looks like Im gettin the files on disc tommorow, means Im printing/laminating/installing.. Full Price.

best solution, though the design leaves a little to be desired, IMO.

We just did something similar to this today, but on a much smaller scale.

Tell them you’ll provide the graphics and install them professionally for $X,XXX.00 amount and make sure the job is completed correctly.

- OR -
You’ll use their graphic prints with full payment in advance and if/when anything goes wrong… it is their full responsibility to get the new sections needed. You are not responsible for any re-prints, even if you caused it.

You’re responsible for your own work, not someone else’s who might not even be creating it properly.

I was just going to have a cup of coffee and a donut, but now I've lost my appetite for both after looking at that design. LOL After that, I think I need a:beer

I'd quote a high price to install it and move on. If the client OK's the high price, great. If not, I won't loose any sleep.

Here are 2 more resources....

http://www.uasg.org/
http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/Graphics/Scotchprint/WTB/Installers?PC_7_0_QD0_assetType=MMM_Article&PC_7_0_QD0_assetId=1114270076753%20&PC_7_0_QD0_univid=1114270076753%20

the idea is, that there are many companies specializing in installation who make a great living at it with certain requirements and not charging the full amount, the other idea is that you can also use these resources so you can concentrate on selling, designing and service and have a back-up when you get jobs out of your scope of work.

I'm sorry, third party or not, I wouldn't want future prospect to think that something that bad came out of my shop...I would approach them with two offers. Make a new design, with your regular price of course that will look better and you will know it will work and then show them that thing again...and charge them double for the headache.. but then again, I just wouldn't want people thinkin' I design that...

I know it's not much but it's worked in the past...Good Luck!

Thanks for the plug, Rick! Keep in mind that while some PDAA members may specialize in installations, it's not cheaper. It may be better, though.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the design. It should be pretty effective. Figure on it taking two guys a whole day. Multiply that by your labor rate, plus a little fudge factor and bid the job. We do a lot of installs for people who had someone else do the printing, who had someone else do the design. Not sure why they do it this way, but oh well. Just do the install, and make sure your butt's covered. Lay the panels out before you start, if there are ANY problems, don't proceed until you get further directions.

Well, the job is well within my scope of work, Im just not enthusiastic about someone else designing, yet another printing and yet another coming to me with the job looking for installation, that being said, problem solved, met with the owner of the vehicle yesterday, he provided me the files, though he wants the layout as it stands (I dont have to drive it) so Im printing and installing, check is in hand. Problem solved.

I really miss Drunkin Blownuts . . . They used to be here, but now they're all gone !

Florida was full of them, then moved to TX where there are none anymore... We then got Krispy Kream but they expanded to fast and the majority of those shut down. So you have to go to gas station/walmart to get day old donuts. But at least we have a local company that is fairly good...
