I have a customer wanting 8 banners, they will be used multiple times and more than likely treated rough. What is the best way to protect the printing.
Roll two coats of liquid clear on them.
When not in use keep them rolled up on a rigid tube.
While in use.... keep them taut all the time.

we use clear shield.. just one coat.. but we have ones we have been using for over a year now that we put up and take down daily.. with no signs of wear.

Banners are temporary signs and as such the customer must realise they wont last forever.
I've had customers that have had banners for over 2 years complain about them!!! What they should have done is bought something that resembled a sign!

Don't run it over with your truck.

Heavy material, lots of grommets, web, etc. Teach 'em how to roll 'em. Make sure they use bungies instead of string.

Ive done plenty of banners like that....Clearshield Gloss from Clearstar and heat-sealed edges work great. 13oz QUALITY MATERIAL...1000 Denier. And like Bogie said...teach them how to take care of them!
