Been using Versaworks for my Roland, and other than the obvious gray problems..(grrr... my eye twitches still thinking about that 14 foot grayscale mural...) it's been fairly decent.

Just got back form CONSAC last weekend, and was talking RIP to a few vendors there.

I got an almost unaminous vouch for Onyx.

Has anyone seen a head to head with Onyx vs. Versaworks? I'm especially interested in picking up greys..as that seems to be my huge issue with Versaworks.

I admit that I am HUGELY intimidated by the prospect of colour management, and changing profiles.. and I have been told that this is a less dauntig task in Onyx...

You have my ear, Onyx users....(And especially anyone who has used BOTH Onyx and Versaworks...)

if you ever want to really fix it
go Xrite/MOnaco profiler.
It's all in the profile.

KR3 has it correct. It's all in your profiles. You can have that issue in any RIP if the profiles are bad.

Ditto - you need to build neutral profiles.

Am I grounded to say how intimidated I am by this process?

Profiles are a big deal...

You can print "pretty good" with correct media profiles, but the mamba-jamba is in the icc profiles. Tweak the percentages of each color it puts down in each situation for each media. Yep.... it's a daunting propisition for the color-noob. $1500 for an eye1 (or equivalent) plus hours and hours of time.

Onyx gives you granular control over all that, I don't know anything about versaworks.
