Hi. I need to paint a carved sign with gold lettering. What's the best paint for this? Would like to have the look of gold leaf.
Thanks.

There is nothing "like" gold leaf. The paint I would use is 1Shot metallic gold. It is dull compared to gold leaf. Depending on the job and customer, talk them up to gold leaf. It is not hard to do on carved signs and cheaper than you think.

sophisticated finishes gold paint, closest I've found to looking like gold leaf... nothing looks like real leaf, but this stuff still looks good. Much brighter than 1-Shot's gold, which I refuse to use anymore, it seems like there's half the pigment in it there was just a few years ago.
http://www.modernoptions.com/ is the website to buy it at... they've got alot of other great paints too, especially for weathered or patina looks like copper or bronze.
But yeah, if you really want a gold leaf look, use gold leaf. It's not difficult at all to gild something simple like a carved or sandblasted sign, just knowing when the size is ready is the hardest part, but even that's not hard.

The only gold paint I have ever found that truly looks good if you can't gild is Matthews Paint.

I think the color is called Brilliant Gold.

I am a huge fan of WH Kemp's Permagild:

But it's very hard to find.
Ronan makes a nice gold paint called Aqua Leaf that comes in some cool colors.
Either is better than 1S.

Jill, you're right about WH Kemp's Permagild. I forgot about that. I have a can in the shop and have used it many times. The 1Shot I have used as a undercoating for gold leaf. It works good when tacky and a fast size is applied over. The undercoat is to help hide the "holidays", for those that haven't leafed.
