After having resisted facebook and myspace forever, I now have yet another time taking distraction! Facebook! Thanks mick, cara, mark, jenn and others for leading me into the darkness. Anyone else find it compellingly addicting?

I love Twitter. I follow some of my family members all day, and drop a 'tweet' or two myself a few times a day. It's pretty entertaining and doesn't take up much of my time.

Anyone else here have a blog associated with their website, or facebook page?

Facebook is like a computer virus, once you get infected it can over take your computer in no time.

I'm flipping between Facebook & Signs101 all day. I never got into the MySpace thing, seemed a little too open to the public. You can't really have any weirdo's getting a hold of you w/o your permission on Facebook. It's a great way to stay in better contact w/ friends and family, and it's not just for teenage punks anymore.

LOL, i'm never on my face book, but people keep adding me anyway.
I do use it to find contact info for old friends, or to occasionally kick myself for not noticing a girl in high school who grew up to be an uber hottie.

Well guess what.. All of my "virtual friends" are my real friends.

I guess you meant republican?? yep... but only 43yo!@ just a pup!

All my "real friends" are some of my neighbors, most of the guys I play golf with, and almost all of my customers.

People I chitchat on the internet with are aquaintances, but I hold the term "friend" to a higher value than it is used commonly these days.

Maybe I am getting older, still white, and a conservative republican (does that matter?)... but it works for me.

I don't begrudge you guys your online buddies, I just feel like living my life in the flesh and blood... not in pixel-ville.

As an SEO adviser, I ALWAYS advise my website clients to make a FaceBook Profile. FaceBook has a Google ranking of 7-8, and if a website ranked that high is linked to a website, it gains instant credibility and a better Google ranking itself. However, the college interns I employ are never allowed to get on FaceBook ... or I'll never get them off it. Ha ha!

That may be true, but I would also advice your clients that if they link their site to sites like this (especially facebook) and they website has their email address or even a standard contact form, they can be certain to see an increase in spam in their inbox. The only way to stop this is to use contact forms that require a security question to be answered before they can submit the form, but that only helps a little. Regardless the cons out way the pros of linking to facebook. We found out the hard way.:omg:

Thanks Doug, for mentioning this thread!

If you're in the marketing business, you can't afford to ignore social media. I'm on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=561423205&ref=profile) and twitter (http://twitter.com/Jon_Aston), mostly.

BTW, this (http://www.signs101.com) is another terrific social network to be on, especially as a premium member.

Lastly, here (http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0) is a "must see" in social media circles.

you're welcome Jon...

This thread launched my own Facebook addiction just in the last week and a half. I really don't have tiome for another internet addiction, so I will keep it to a low roar (I hope) but thanks to the users here who invited my to become "friends" over there... which led to discovering some value in the network over there.

I found Jon as a friend showing up in some other sign persons profile page & when I saw Jon's page, I thought it was one of the more inspiring ones, in that like a good blog, he has new content, and through links, some interesting content, changing fairly often, without a lot of writing time on his part. New & varied content makes people look at your page longer, and come back more often, so that is what we want when we are marketing. Without even trying, Jon was showing me the marketing potential of social networking... all he needs is to promote his Marketing Partners business there!

Jon has taught me so much about marketing, I can almost teach him a few things now (http://tinyurl.com/7tpxet)! :notworthy:

i can't believe i got rick rolled 2x's reading this post...uggg! Anyhow....I got onto FB a couple weeks ago, one of my friends sd I would like it...mainly as a social thing...to reconect with friends etc. And it has been really fun. Didnt think about using it for business mainly because my political views, religiuos views, are on there which as we all know are very touchie subjects and I dont mix them with business. I have pics posted from the campaign and pics from parties...stuff my friends would enjoy. So after reading this thread earlier in the week, I decided to do a Big House Signs page...have pics of work we've done. But I can't figure out how to promote that page...is there a way to invite friends to be fans?....and as I add "stories" or pics are the fans notified so they come back and check...I dont think so. I never get updates to any of the fan pages I've subsribed to. Anyone?

I did a search on face book just using the word "signs". Of the pages I looked at, Dan Antonelli's page had the most fans at 56. I have a whopping 11...So I dont think as far as marketing goes...to do a fan or company page is worth it. To stay in touch with my kids:

To gain search engine ranking/relevancy and build a customer support community:

MySpace, Facebook, Google Friend Connect, Skype, Get Satisfaction, Blogspot and Add This. (Twitter, too. But it's junk from a business standpoint ... moved to Blogspot, a way better biz platformm)

Social networks are real valuable business tools. Anyone else using them as such?

Drives traffic to your commercial site, and if done correctly can get your some high-powered (weighted) backlinks. But I'm hesitant to say a lot more, for competitive reasons. A lot of what I know is researchable online, however. So you can still gain some leverage with minimal effort.

Best,

Jim

You know you're one of my marketing heroes, right? It surprises me to hear you say that "twitter is junk for business". You couldn't be more wrong. Maybe it sucks for your business, but much depends the business you are in, and who you are targeting. And I guaranty that you would benefit personally and professionally from investing time in twitter. We should chat about it some time. Jim:

You know you're one of my marketing heroes, right? It surprises me to hear you say that "twitter is junk for business". You couldn't be more wrong. Maybe it sucks for your business, but much depends the business you are in, and who you are targeting. And I guaranty that you would benefit personally and professionally from investing time in twitter. We should chat about it some time. Let me know the best days/times to reach you, or if you want to schedule a phone call.

Hi Jon,

LOL! You got me. Twitter is indeed the micro-blog to end all micros. Google-crawled to the max. But they're another one of those VC-bux-hemorraging operations (read: zip support). Folks are having huge log-in issues (me too). And there's little more that folks can do than create a new account.

Plus, it's a micro. Blogger/Blogspot can be more content-rich (read: more and better weighted backlinks). And it's owned by folks with tons of profit (Google). So I think Blogspot is a better / more reliable platform for businesses. Twix is for kids :^)

Meanwhile, if you can get a password reset sent to me for www.twitter.com/yellotools (http://www.twitter.com/yellotools) you'll be my hero. I sent support requests for over a month, flamed on Get Satisfaction, tried to call. Nada. Their password reset system is corrupted, a wide spread problem.

Cheers,

Jim

PS: to explain further the log-in problem, and how that's a problem for businesses: folks and magazine ediitors subscribe / add book-marks. Then you can't add to it and have to start a new blog, but you've promoted the old one .... which is getting stale and there's seemingly no solution from within the Twitter organization.

Businesses need a more reliable platform.

I'm on LinkedIn but stay away from the other social networking sites. Between My full time engineering job, my signs business, my 3 year old, and my 6 year old; there is very little time. I have many friends that can't set their mobile devices down as they are always chirping from an update from one of their friends on these sites.

Some high school friends talked me into going on FB, i've since deleted that page and now only have a page where i accept "Sign" friends. I like that MUCH better... limiting it to people with similar interests.... it's a nice mix of a little personal and a little business.

i pop in and see what's up with folks on FB, but i'm not all addicted to the snippets postings there and almost never post anything myself... but here... totally addicted. even here, i read WAY MORE than i post.

well it's not really, is it?
I think the question YOU asked is a very interesting one...

a 5 page thread clearly represents a lot of S101 people who have already "been there, & done that" with regards to visiting this thread again at all...

...and even myself earlier today... I saw your link & knew that I had "been there, & done that" too...

...so I didn't click it.. and mark my words, most people will not click it & will continue (as they already are) talking about this threads 2 year old title, and if they are "there" and if it is "addictive"...

I did go back now & look at that link. I think that would be quite an interesting discussion topic.. but somehow being the 119th reply never works quite as well as a "topic starter" in my opinion... but, that's just my opinion.

i'll bite colin.

as to the title, do you trust facebook?
hell no! it's a corporation, and corporations are all corporationy. of course they will gather all my interests and info into a matrix and try to sell me more shi- i don't need. that's the american way, right? there are glitches though... some reason fb continually tries to hook me up with bbw singles sites, apparently there's thousands in my area. aside from my interest in hip-hop/r&b musicians, there's no provocation for these ads.

to be honest, the whole thing felt like an under-produced alex jones vid.

my golden rule for all internetz: if you don't want people to know, don't post it on the interwebz.

I've found our business FB page is far easier to update with news and photos than my website, and so I've been sending new inquiries to the FB page to show them what we do.

With our own FB domain name, it's easy and the networking concept is still valuable...but it's sure easy to burn an hour here and there if you're not careful.

Thanks again to all the Signs101 members who helped me out of my facebook predicament last week.

Since "somebody else" is still ultimately in control of FB, we'll never give up our own web page.

I think it is much easier to navigate my business page then the website. I always have facebook on all day in the back. I love it...I have the best news feed. I have a lot more friends on the personal page than the business page. After I post stuff to the biz page I then share it back to my own page. Facebook is also great for events and fundraisers too.

Call me a phillistine but hustling for work on facetube brings to mind visions of someone's dad handing out business cards at the school disco.

Twitter is an oxymoron... important world class people like Stephen Hawkings would be possible be worth reading... however, world class people like Stephen Hawkings have got better things to do with their time than shout into the digital void.
