.I have a bunch of clipart in EPS vector. Is there a way or program that allows you to view eps files in windows xp when you use thumbnail view like how you see jpg pictures? I am using XP? I have irfanview but you have to open each on individually .

If you have a copy of Adobe Bridge it will let you preview an eps file.

This is what I use. It's free and works well.

Only if it saved with a preview or you save/create it yourself. I have dozens of folders of eps clipart that bridge will not preview. I have to open/resave the eps for bridge to preview it

Here's a link (http://www.signs101.com/forums/showthread.php?t=62185) to a thread where this was discussed just 10 days ago.

Ifran is good as is ST Thumbnail Explorer and all those programs mentioned in the previous thread but none will work worth a damn if there isn't a Tiff header in the EPS.

Au contraire Mon Ami ... Extensis Portfolio does not suffer from such shortcomings.
Here are screen shots of two EPS files I intentionally saved as EPS without a preview and then added to a Portfolio database. The first screen shows the thumbnail view and the second screen shows the detail view when the thumbnail is double clicked. The third screen shows a catalog I made some time ago with AI files without previews.
Of additional interest, the version of Portfolio that I am using is version 4 which is 10 years old. It will thumbnail and process the full size into a viewable JPG which can also be keyworded for searching later.

Extensis Portfolio is available as a 30 day free trial HERE (http://www.extensis.com/en/downloads/download_search_results.jsp?productLabel=Portfolio&platform=Win&language=English).
There are also online videos and other documentation. Here is a link (http://www.extensis.com/en/products/asset_management/portfolio-file-formats.jsp) to the supported formats, which include Illustrator EPS and AI.

I may have to try the trial version. Does it work on files that you never created yourself? I have a cd with eps files that won't show the preview on anything until I actually resave it

As a publisher of vector clipart I can tell you that the only EPS and AI you can count on to work everytime is that which has been saved from Adobe Illustrator. For example, CorelDRAW and FlexiSIGN will often fail to import their own EPS exports even though other applications will handle them okay.

+1 what Fred said. Extensis Portfolio is great !
I can confirm Windows 7 does not show eps thumbs...
:rolleyes: Hmmm... on my Mac, I select the EPS file, press the spacebar and "poof", I have a large preview right there in front of me. Feature called quick view. Now... along the lines of what Fred said... it only seems to work with EPS created in Illy.

Thanks for that link Fred... Although I don't really need Extensis Portfolio, it has led me to their Font Management software (Suitcase Fusion 2)... and it looks like what I really need... I've always struggled with font management software!!

That is a distinct possibility. As I've posted on any number of occasions, if one wants an EPS that will work universally without any problems, then one should always open and resave them in Illustrator. That's what we've done with every Plotter Art™ EPS file in our collections. The same is true for every file published in the Vector Art Mega Collections and pretty much any legitimate clipart publisher I've ever run across.
When one gets their EPS art on ebay at prices one knows are so low that they can't be legitimate, one should expect some shortcuts have been taken and some deficiencies exist.

XnView is another great program.
After reading the threads I decided to try and catalog my art files and build PDF catalogs with it.
The program reads EPS, AI and CDR and countless others.
Here's a screen shot of a file folder I opened. Kinda nifty.

How about making a backup of files and coverting them to jpg. Does any one know of a fast software to convert eps/ai to jpg ?

Photoshop. Create an Action to open, size uniformly, and save. Then use it to process batches of files at a time.

We only have AI CS4 to open and preview client files and save them out to use in CD (no one here is versed enough in AI to actually use it).
Is there an Illustrator script (free) that will open AI files and resave them with a preview header or maybe convert them to EPS and save? If so, wher can I find that puppy?
I have about 150 files that are not viewable except by importing into AI one at a time and that is just too much like work.
Thanks.

Probably little known and not too mainstream, but with CoCut from Eurosystems they provide a program called Job Manager 6. It is a lot like these others mentioned, but does a very good job of many file types including: EPS, AI, CDR, etc. all in one package. Although it craps out on a few files here and there, but for the most part it does a great job. I don't know if they provide it any other way other than with CoCut, but it actually works pretty darn well.
