Hello, I'm new to the sign industry and am making my way through the process. I have over 30 years graphic design experience, and have just recently started up a print shop at my job. (Had to research ALL equipment, purchase, train, and produce on my own) I worked at a sign shop 20 years ago, but things have changed a lot since then. lol. everything back then was done with stat cameras, T-square and triangles, hot wax, and hand lettering. So, now I have started up a print department for the carwash industry (company that I work for, carwash equipment manufacturer and distributor for other equipment and soaps) I'm making signage, decals, and laminated items like pumptoppers and menu displays, and just jumped into banners. I gotta say, the printing aspect of my job now is fun and exciting. I only had 2 days training on the HP310 latex printer, the graphtec 8600 cutter, Flexi 12 software, and the GSP laminator. I started all this back in September and have come a loooooog way since then, now cranking out jobs daily without issues. This website has helped me immensely, everyone is more than willing to help when I have questions, thank you everyone! It's been a trying process narrowing down the correct vinyl and laminates I need for my jobs, as well as learning techniques, but at least I have a boss who's giving me the budget I need to try things out and the confidence that I'm doing the best I can. I appreciate everyone's help on this website, and I wouldn't be able to make it through the daily grind without your help (and loads of youtube videos). I look forward to the future and what I can learn more about sign making, it's very exciting and rewarding when a customer is happy :) Thanks everyone. - Mary

    Hello!
My name is Kayla, my former co-worker told me about this site because I am trying to sell my sign shop equipment. I recently owned my own business but I had decided to drop the business and go back to school for awhile. selling my equipment will help pay for school. I have 8 years of graphic design experience and working in the sign industry. I went to college for a year for Graphic Arts, but no degree. I haven't looked to far into this website yet, but it looks interesting and I cant wait to explore this site. :)

Hi All. I'm new to the sign industry, as in owning my own business. But, I have over 10 years of graphic design and sign making experience from working in other sign shops. I have started up a small sign shop in the small town where i live. i have come on here to learn more about the industry and since i have a small sign shop, i am also on here to get advice on equipment. So that i can update my shop. Like, printers and vinyl cutters.

    Hello,

I've been designing and making signs for 3 months and I'm probably preaching to the choir but the learning curve has been steep. I'm amazed how much I've learned in such a short amount of time using sites like this as a guide. I'm not only trying to fully understand the industry and my new equipment, but learning how to run and grow a business at the same time. I look forward to sharing my experiences.

    Hello Everyone,
My name is Jerry and I currently teach high school art and driver's education. I have a strong love of classic cars and the beautiful pin striping that some of them have. I am "late to the dance" , but I really want to teach myself pin striping. I have a 1952 Chevy 5-window truck that is ready for some customization. I also have a few students that I want to introduce pin striping to, I believe they will love the detail and hopefully give them something to consider as a career. I spent a fair amount on paint, brushes, etc. out of my art budget...as far as I know, pin striping has never been taught at our high school and I am willing and ready to introduce it. I hope that I can count on anyone out there for help and advice.Welcome thread- Tell us about yourself or just say hello.-chevy-1-jpg

Started part time with a local sign guy after high school. Went to Butera Sign School in Boston '74. Been at it one way or another ever since. Current shop started in 1990, bought out my partner in'99. We are a 4 person shop doing a large variety of commercial sign work.

    Hello all.

As my bio says I'm retired U.S.A.F. (20yrs) Graphic Design wasn't my only career field with the military. I spent some years as an Air Cargo Specialist, some as an Aircraft Avionics Technician, then settled into this field for a number of years. That's where my limited Graphic Design training came from. All else has been self taught. I'm not the owner of the business just the lead designer. We have a staff of 8, 11 if you count the owner, his dog and a cat. Been at it here for 12 years and don't have any plans to do anything else. I have my pension, my age and good benefits here. Love family & fast cars

I will offer any help I can in this forum, as well as, others.

p.s. If I had to use anything other than CorelDRAW I'd find a new career

I started in the biz back in 1987. started off having to hand paint signs and am not one of the old timers who longs for days gone by and am glad for the new technology in the industry. if I never have to pounce, use a projector and paint again, it is fine by me. I've taken college courses on type, graphic design and marketing. I do just about everything from designing to selling to construction and such.

Hi everyone and Happy Holidays! I worked for Hardin Signs in Peoria for 23 years before we closed the doors in May. Ultimately I chose to follow the dream to be my own boss, and keep making/facilitating professional signs for our area. A bit scary at times, but a deep breat and dive into it!

I worked for Lamar Advertising designing and painting billboards. Swung from stage scaffolding back before OSHA was a PITA and loved every minute of it. Started my own company in 1989, hand paint, airbrush, overhead projector....it was a blast! There was not a sign company on every block back then. The technology we have today is awesome and I learned to embrace it

    Hello everyone,
I got my start making hand painted and routered signs back in 1992. At first we laid things out by eye and later utilized a projector. After doing that for four years I learned graphic design around 1996. I went to school for commercial art and graphic design. Since then, I've done graphics work for t-shirt shops, printing company's, a alcohol distributor and a bunch of sign shops. I currently manage and do graphics for a small satellite shop owned by one of the larger sign shops in the area. I've organized several art shows and have shown paintings in a few galleries. I carve soapstone and like to draw with colored pencils and ink. I briefly ran a music and art venue and have promoted over 100 music concerts, mostly punk rock. I love building brands, designing signs and promoting businesses. Signs 101 is a great resource and hope to be a member for a long time.

    Hello Marry

Thanks for writing about you. I think we have lots of similarities thats why I like to talk to you through this website. I am also a graphic designer with more than 35 years of experience and Applied Art Degree. I worked through my life with advertising agencies, print houses and in house advertising departments. I use to write sign board with paint, brush and ladder. Now I have decided to start my own sign making business and also purchased few used equipments (Mimaki JV33-130 and Graphtec FC8000-130). I am facing lots of issues because I never used these equipments but willing to use them as a professional. I am using Rasterlink for printing and Cutting Master3 for cutting job. But I am stuck here it comes to print and contour cut, my graphic cutter gives me hard time to scan the registration marks. I don't know where I can learn all the techniques.

Now I have joined this forum and hope I will get solution of my issues that I am getting time to time. If you have any suggestions for me I will be happy to listen. I live in Canada Toronto.

I wish you success with your profession.

    Thanks

    Regards
    Gurdeep
