most devices still have a com1 and com2 even if they are just phantom devices, and perhaps a header on the motherboard, deep in the laptop
if you are using a usb to serial device, it would normally be com4 or...

there are 4 pairs of transistors. From collector of the npn to emitter of the pnp is approx 41 Vdc.
on each pair there is 41 volts from center pin to center pin.
