Application / Transfer tape trouble removing

Hello

I have been using vinyl for paint mask / paint stencils. I use mactac vinyl mainly use the 5 year permanent vinyl, rarely do I use the mactac paint mask version because its just doesn't stick enough . The permanent stuff works fine and its removes easily enough after. Ideally I would do a test and see which one would suit the job but 9 times out of 10 the permanent does the trick..

My real problem is the application and or transfer tape. The problem is with taking off the transfer tape once I have applied the vinyl to the wall. I use "main tape" paper high tack and the clear medium tack. Both are very frustrating. What I have done is lay out the transfer by itself, no vinyl on my table preferably three times; example roll it out ,, roll it back up ,, roll it out ,, roll it back up,, then apply it to the vinyl. I do this to take away the tackiness. In the end this does help but it is very time consuming.

Maybe I want it to go to quick. Its not that the job is terrible or I don't end up with a good job. I just feel there is potentially a better way to remove the transfer tape. Maybe part of the issue is that I don't want the vinyl adhering to the wall to good because it comes off by the end of the day anyways after its painted.

Looking for some info on tips or tricks or maybe a legitimate low tack transfer tape, does it even exist??:banghead: because the suppliers in my city have no clue really. I know though this is very fringe application for this type of thing and mainly not for this industry.

Most brands of paper transfer tape come in low / medium & high tack. You can also lay the vinyl down and wet the transfer tape and let it soak for 5 minutes, makes it easier to remove.

contact RTape, they have NUMEROUS adhesive grades and will send samples to test what works

we spray windex and spread it around by hand to lightly wet the surface, then proceed to peel. no ammonia formula of course.

Isn't it still wax based? Do you do this before laying down the vinyl or after it's been applied dry? It seems like his would cause the vinyl to not stick as good, as well as leaving wax residue behind to deal with before painting.

after laying the vinyl to the substrate on top of the transfer tape. helps release the tape from the vinyl.

It might not be the tape. It could be the paint on the wall. I do lettering for an art gallery and it took us awhile to find out exactly which vinyl to use on their walls. They were mainly using matte and eggshell finishes and oddly, higher grade vinyls weren't adhering.

Can I ask why you're using a 6 year vinyl for something so temporary and not using mask? OR, get in Oracal 631 Exhibition Cal. It's real cheap and sticks to painted surfaces very well.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention is mainly exterior surfaces that I'm using the vinyl for, mainly brick but other surfaces as well. I do have a paint mask version but doesn't stick to the wall very good.

I was thinking about putting a dusting of baby powder on the vinyl or something like that before putting the transfer tape on . I know it sound kinda dum / risky but might work.

The water trick sonds viable but paint and water dont mix to well generally you want dry surface. I guess if careful then the water wont get on the wall that will be painted. Does the water not seep through the transfer tape to the vinyl?

Well I'm going to try rtape "at60" that's the clear pre mask low tack. Any body use that stuff? I have real doubts about this. I'm thinking I'll still have to do my pre stick system. I just did it again ( the pre stick system) and it worked but it takes a lot longer to apply the pre mask. I was using main tape clear medium tack.

Ok so I tried the at60 I sort of jumped the gun and practically bought a life time supply. Now I'm thinking maybe medium would of worked?

I love the way it comes off when the vinyls on the surface you want almost fall off, that part is perfect... However it struggles to keep the counters of the letters stuck to the transfer tape , a lot of fussing with that now.

I suppose its what do I want to spend my time doing. I appears fussing will occur some form or fashion. Really tight and intricate stuff maybe something more tackier, big stuff this would be ok.
