For those that work from home, did you find it difficult to get commercial insurance?
My insurance guy is telling me that most companies do not like covering people who work from home...I don't get it... I will pay so what is the problem.

What a clusterfrik that is... almost doubled my policy from disclosing i print from home.
But the alternative was no cover. The insurers idea of printing was i had hunderds of drums of solvent.
When i told him there was more risk from my wife's nail polish remover. i have a 300ml bottle of cleaner for the print head

They're quite a few reasons, it's expensive.

What kinda ventilation do you have ??
How do you store your inks and other solvents ??
Eco-sol inks are very flammable. Are they stored in a place with explosive-proof lights and other electrical switches and such ??
Do you have adequate rest rooms in a private section in case a customer or salesman calls on you ??
Do you have proper parking, including handicapped, not to mention an ADA ramp ??

The list can go on, if you're perfectly honest with them.

I have separate property insurance for my equipment. I do not have many customers stopping by. Only to pick up decals occasionally etc.
I was never asked anything else. Certainly nothing about bathroom! They saw my equipment. (64” printer laminator plotter etc) My homeowners covers liability since it is not technically a retail business. I have one sign on the house pointing to the sign entrance slider. Nothing on the road. I have the insurance through AAA. It’s state property insurance. Not cheap. But at least they know there’s a business here. Too risky otherwise. They are separate policies.
Shop for vehicles is out back. I kind of kept that out of it. Easy to do so since it’s literally just a heated barn.
Helps a lot that I am on a main road.

This will depend on jurisdiction, I have no idea how the canucks do it, but here where I am at specifically, they actually don't allow visitors for a home business, so rather or not "you" are compliant with that stuff is irrelevant as just being caught with customers/sales rep (or anything related to the business venture that would remotely cause a "congestion" issue) would get "you" into hot water here. Shoot, having one's vehicle with business branding (regardless if it's home based or not) will get one into trouble if in a subdivision (I'm not).

+1 no clue how canadian insurance works
but here in 'murica, homeowner's insurance and general small business liability insurance usually does the trick

Homeowner's insurance will not cover any liability arising from business activity in your home. General liability insurance will usually exclude any activity that occurs in your home or any non-conforming location. If business use of your home is not restricted in your community, and proper measures are taken to comply with any regulations, you can usually get a homeowner's policy endorsement or an In-Home business policy. Business Owners policies (BOP) are also available that combine commercial property and general liability into one policy.

Sometimes the best solution is moving your business into a commercial property zoned for the activity you do. Insurance rates will be much lower, which may provide an economic incentive.

I'm moving home as the rent where I have been for 30 years is just basically double from what it was 10 years ago and due to now being a 1 man shop for the last 6 years, my volume of sales has dropped. Don't get me wrong, I have enough business to cover rent and everything else but I am 68 now and want to keep the business alive and take advantage of the expenses...so basically I want to slow down. I have set up my basement and make the final move in 3 weeks. I have enough room to fit everything on one side of the basement. I don't plan on doing vehicles from home, so if a customer has indoor facilities and a warm environment I will do the work offsite and see how that goes or just dump all vehicle graphics all together. I definetley will not have people coming to my home to do business and will instead, go to them to talk, but these days everything is email and phone calls so that won't be a problem. I am looking forward to this change and hopefully get out golfing a lot more... As far as insurance goes... I just want to make sure I am covered and protect my home.
Only taking the printer, two plotters, a laminator and my Gerber Edge (never use it anymore except white on clear). The garage will house my panel saw and my substrates
