Opinion Faux Neon Sign Enclosed in Cabinet???

DisplayWorks S&G

New Member
Hello! I was wondering if anyone has had experience with faux neon signs for exterior use.

I have a client who wants a 1:1 of a sign we fabricated for his interior but for the facia on the exterior of his building.

My first thought here would be to enclose the sign inside a slim cabinet with EX aluminum extrusions with a clear acrylic face to protect it. My only concerns here would be condensation on the interior of the acrylic face.

Does anyone have experience with this??? IMG_5080.jpeg

I mean, we used to shove neon into cans with clear faces all the time. They will generate condensation, but the sun will dry it out. Make sure to have drain holes, you don't want a truly water tight fixture, or you will end up with mold. I'd be more worried about these LED's holding up to the sun's UV.

The neon strip is pretty delicate and I'd be concerned how the small solder points would hold up in the weather as well as the clear polycarbonate. I know the neon strip will not be very happy if it gets wet. These faux neon signs have gotten pretty cheap but I'd personally only sell them for interior spaces. I'd recommend doing an acrylic push through style channel letter outdoor like the attached neon faux push through letters. We can fabricate these if you have any interest in outsourcing.

A few more push through style channel letters attached below. A larger logo could also be done with push through say 40"x 60" Your logo above could be done with clear push through acrylic with vinyl on both side for color. Let me know size desired and if you'd like me to price it out for you to give client a better outdoor option.

I'm kicking myself for not having a photo, but we just did a 8'x12' multicomponent logo for a new purple cow location. Any given piece fit on a 4x8. It was our largest push thru to date. Here's some crappy facebook video of it being lifted:
