Going out on my own, need advice on a cutter

I am going out on my own and am going to sub out the printing for now until business picks up but would like a cutter in the shop. In a perfect world I would have a Roland or a Graphtec but $4000 right out the box isn't an option. I see Master or GCC America Expert cutters for sale and they are pretty cheap cost wise but how good are they use wise. Does anyone have thoughts on cheaper brands such as reliability or getting parts such as new blades. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I have a GCC Jaguar, it performs brilliantly and the accuracy is perfect. Just make sure you get all the right drivers and support with it, I had trouble getting Flexisign to recognise it.

I'd buy a used Summa before the other two choices. Check ebay, craigslist etc... From time to time Summa sells demos and refurbs too.

Are you really sure you want to skimp on the most important machine in the shop?

The most important machine in the Shop should be the Operator... But I digress.

A Good Machine on a lower end budget, GCC Expert, Puma, Jaguar, and now the RX are very good machines. I have a Jaguar IV (Going on 5 Years, very reliable) and am possibly looking to get a RX unless I can find a deal on a SUMMA Tagnetial.

A Great Machine on a Medium budget, any of the Rolands or Mimakis (even older ones).

Top of the Line - SUMMA.... Hands down, most owners say they wish they would have started with it.

Agree with OP - that is a great machine, supports up to 30" rolls, very accurate and should get you by until business grows and the time comes you need to buy bigger to go with your printer!

over the years this board has watched untold number of newbs come in and ask for advice on a cheapo cutter.
In that same amount of time we watched number of newbs go for cheapo cutter "just to get started".

We watched and advised many to obtain a top brand machine. We watched as way too many disregarded our advice. It was some hard lessons learned because there was so much more than just getting a cutter and going for it. Tracking, software, connections, static cling, junk motors, bad bearings, reverse notation drivers, all of which left the newb user with frustrations and stresses we would not wish on our worst enemy.

The need for tech support that the cheapo never gave was a pet peeve. Why should we have to teach or fix a new machine when the manufacturer got paid and left the buyer hanging out to dry? Hundreds of newbs came here for help in getting their machines running. Some walked away from it all because the cheapo cutters cost them more in wasted time and materials. Some stuck with it getting by day to day with way more pain and suffering than they deserved. Recutting a job at least twice was the norm.

A few finally gave in and got a great cutter and suddenly became enlightened with what the old timers knew. In fact, one old timer posting above used early model Roland cutters. Then got a great deal on a used updated version Roland from ebay and saw just how much of a different life that plenty of his peers were experiencing.

Great tracking, quiet machines, getting a job done first time every time, reliable day after day with nary a need to post about some obscure problem never before found in nature.

The lessons learned? Get a TOP name brand cutter and never look back. The money made using a great cutter will pay back very quick.

I took this advice myself when purchasing some software. That package cost over 2 grand but the extended ability returned the extra money within the very first weeks.

Do the same. Get a name brand cutter where the extended abilities will pay back in resale value alone. Forget the cheapo shortcuts through the untrodded weeds. Them weeds is full of briars, poison ivy, weasel p!ss and snakes.

Choosing a Vinyl Cutter

I am going out on my own and am going to sub out the printing for now until business picks up but would like a cutter in the shop. In a perfect world I would have a Roland or a Graphtec but $4000 right out the box isn't an option. I see Master or GCC America Expert cutters for sale and they are pretty cheap cost wise but how good are they use wise. Does anyone have thoughts on cheaper brands such as reliability or getting parts such as new blades. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Perhaps we can help. As many have already said, getting a name brand cutter is really the best bet. The two most reasonably priced and popular brands that have good full time support within the US are Roland and Graphtec. Most sign shops tend to go with one of these brands because they are well engineered, well built and very reliable and they have all the features (depending on the model) that the user will need.

If interested in learning more please see this link for details: http://www.bestblanks.com/vinylcutters.html

As a large volume distributor for both these brands we can tell you we have thousands of satisfied clients who typically do not need support on these and that says a lot about the brand. When a client does require help we offer toll free (in-house) tech support to get you up and running quickly.

Remember, you get what you pay for. If you are in business, invest once wisely in your equipment so you spend your time selling and producing and not sidetracked with equipment issues.

Thanks for your post!

If your looking for cheap you can always go with Signwarehouse Vinyl Express R series. They are super cheap. And unless they have changed it, they will give you full trade in value within a year of purchase toward a new machine, which for me when i started was after the first job. That will let you try a economy cutter without throwing your money down the drain. You never know you might be able to get by for a while with it.
