Illy: Cutting an gradient object

So, I have an oval shape and I want to cut a piece off of it. the shape has a gradient color. When I try a divide or clipping mask technique, the stroke fills in over the cut edge and the gradient pattern adjusts. Argh. How can I just want the object to be chopped without updating.

Yeah, but I was trying to create a seamless pattern, cutting the edges in half so they would mesh.

Instead I adjusted the patterns so the pattern terminated near the the edge, but wasn't cut by it.

I can't seem to save a swatch, a drag n drop doesn't work. more hassle.
