A couple of times a year we need a good vector file of the SC state seal. We have never had a decent copy, we have tried to redraw it a few times, but always get frustrated because the best versions we can find are so bad we cant even read what the words are so we end up using a bad bitmap file.
This year, a customer gave us the URL to the official state website to download the art. We got all excited about it, the site had download links in several formats. We downloaded the art in all the formats (PDF, Illi, etc), and discovered that they were all just the same crummy bitmap scan that we had been using for years.
Just another case of "just because someone saves a lousy bitmap image into a Illi file does not magically make it good vector art".
And I bet the State paid big bucks to some web designer to setup that page and artwork for them.

I forgot about that site. I started filling in the new registation info and it told me I was already registered, so I logged in, and went to add money to the account, turns out I already had money in the account. I think I spent $1.60 to get something off it a year or so ago.
Now I am wondering how much money I may have floating around in cyber space and forgot about. I wonder if any of that is drawing interest?

Offtopic: does anyone actually pay to use those vectorizing services, like the kind advertised on brandsoftheworld? I wouldn't because I'm pretty handy at it, but I'm still curious how successful they are, and what the quality of the artwork is like. I wonder if they just use nice autotrace software on a lot of it, or stick to doing it by hand, or what.
