Just Bought A SC-500

I currently purchased a Roland SolJet II SC-500 to play around with since I would like to try stuff other then plotted vinyl. We have since purchased replaced the heads but we have a couple issues or not really issues just questions.

I use Flexi Sign 7.52 to print / cut from. I most the time use Adobe Illustrator or Flexi to design.

1) When printing Black it comes out blotchy and / or not a sharp black has some dull parts in it. I have done head clenaings before I start my daily process. Is there some things I can diagnose to try to resolve this problem? Is this common? This normally happens when I dont have solid black maybe like a dark grey or gradient of black and such. Althought it has done it to me when printing solid black. ITs like it isnt real consistant.

2) Kind of like the problem above it does it on some colors as well. It seems like the yellow, and reds are decent but the blues, greens the cold feeling colors it comes out blotchy and spotches on the vinyl as well. At first I thought maybe it was a drying problem? But even after letting it dry it still is blotted out.

3) Its hard to print out a grey shade it barely wants to show up is there a trick of getting grey to print?

4) When I design something in illustrator and import it into flexi its like the colors are off and the graphics are not real sharp. Is there a certain process to design / color it in AI then move it over to flexi. I enjoy the AI Pentool better and such and I find it easier to work in I would like to just use flexi to print and do some logos in. Is this possible?

5) Is there a easy way to kind of print a color chart? So that I can identify what color codes are the best to use because they will print completely different then what is in the program. I am kind of confused on ICC Profiles so I have been using the default ones but is there a way to actually print the squares out on vinyl so I know what to use. I have had to sometimes do 4-5 print samples before I print the final product because the color shades are off.

I dont run a business I use it on our race cars and wanted to do something cool but the design takes grey shades and has a brushed metal effect in it plus I would just like to get use to using a vinyl printer I enjoy the industry but do not have enough time with my full time job to be successfull in such a competetive industry. I appreciate any help I can get. I understand that the Sc-500 is a older model but I have read up on it and it seems to be a decent machine just a little bit slower then the latest technology. Any additional information or service you would recomment would be great. Just trying to get it where every print job is the same it seems like the colors come out different or blotchy and such.

Thanks

Is this something I have to have a tech do? The closest roland tech is not trained on the SC500 is there a good place to call?

Thanks

What media are you printing on? I had some of those issues with my Versacamm until i played around with heat and profiles.

Try turning up the heat, ensure your media is CLEAN... if you touch it with your finger, it will leave a blotchy spot there when it prints from my experience.

Where at would I turn the heat up or down? I am using cheap oracal its like 90$ for a 30" roll...Just to try to learn on.

What is the best ICC profile to use? I have no experience with vinyl printers and ICC profiles. We picked this up used and replaced two of the heads I am not sure if a pump needs to be replaced or not? Hopefully soon I will be able to take some pictures and upload

What media do you guys suggest starting out to learn? I didnt wanna buy any 3m yet until I get experiecned and I plan on just nit picking around with my own stuff until I do a wrap on our race car

Thanks

There will be a lot to go over here.

Does your SC 500 have heaters? (these would be inside the unit but should have a separate box with the temp settings) If you don't see anything then you might have one that has not had heat plates added.
The first ones out did not come with them and if so, you might need to buy specific media for no heat printing. Check out http://www.rolanddga.com/products/media/ to find media and icc profiles.
You will note that some profiles say for no heat.

If you try other vinyl you might find the ink beading like you said, unless you can get the vinyl heated up, and then the ink will soak in better.

If you don't have heaters or the heat cable you will not have the option to use just any vinyl.

You can build your own heat plates if you want to spend some time and do it for $200 to $300. To buy kits can be $1000 and more.
