I am pricing out a fire truck, and I need your recommendations for good quality all around 1/4 small engine turn gold.

They want me to match what is on there. Any they have some kind of vinyl engine turn gold over black vinyl. No laminate or anything. I am wondering if it is a fake gold.

All this stuff is fake gold.... even the 22kt SignGold stuff is fake, no matter what they say. It's just shinier.

Without a picture and seeing it up close, it's gonna be hard to tell what you're trying to match.

If you can't actually gild with real gold leaf, you're stuck using some kinda fake gold vinyl. With fire apparatus, it's comes in close contact with some very hot situations, so you want the entire vinyl protected a little extra by adding a clear overlaminate.

When doing fire engines, ambulances and other rescue stuff, we usually will use 23.5kt gold leaf and if engine turn is desired, we do it before the clear is coated on which usually consists of liquid clear of one or two coats. If someone is cheap about it, we'll use the gold leaf vinyl crap and like you said..... lay the black down, put the gold over top of that and use a clear laminate over the rest with about 1/4" overlap.

One last thing, nothing looks worse than that little engine turn crap you're talking about. It's usually the size of a nickel or so. No one does stuff like that by hand unless you doing a little sign for some jeweler or dumb store front.

Unfortuately not all small engine turn is created the same, and if you are matching existing you need to know what it is. I have gotten burned making that mistake.

This is about the best picture i have of the gold. I never ordered the engine turn gold before. So not sure what to buy.

Looks like Signgold...but can't really tell from a photo. Like I said I've been fooled. Now I either use a sample to match or order the roll & don't do anything till I hold it up nect to the old one to match.

It's better to have two hands than one glove.
Make your own.

Create an engine turn bitmap with a pale yellow base, something on the order of PMS 7402 or so. Add a bump map, use the inverse of the engine turn, and use the result as a fill.

Print the whole thing, gold fill and black outlines and shadows, on a light metallic silver vinyl. I like 3M 180C light silver. Laminate it and contour cut it. Use manual bomb sight registration marks, auto-sensing is iffy with this media.

From a foot away, or even closer, it's hard to tell it from actual gold

I would explain to the customer the advantage that you are offering by laminating and encapsulating the gold vinyl to extend its lifetime.
If you have the diameter of the turn, that would be helpful to us here, as we have no sense of perspective like you do.
We use a lot of Leo's gold products, but I think this is something different (possibly signgold as stated above) but it looks like Small engine turn (SET).

This page has a bit of info on it from the other day: http://www.signs101.com/forums/showthread.php?115334-Fire-Engine-Lettering
