encoder and reader issues

Our SJ-545EX has been having print tracking issues related to our encoder strip reader. Our reader seems to be going bad frequently. ( 3 times in the last 6 months). Our tech is suggesting a servo board, but I hate to just throw parts at it. Has anyone experienced this with their Roland?
