  1. Painting Engraved HDU

We did some monument sign faces for a customer a couple years ago and did them a little different and they turned out pretty well. We cut down the sign blank to the correct size, primed (with the water based primer they make for HDU), sanded and painted the entire blank with Grip Guard plus...
  2. painting process seams

JBurton has some good info there. It also depends on whether that finished panel is rigid or not. Does it have a frame behind it to keep it from bending when you have to move it around? It can be easy to crack that filler in your seam if the panel has too much bend to it. The thinner the...
  3. Question Day Night Options

3M makes perforated vinyl film for day/night applications. Its definitely not 50/50 tho, more like 70/30. The offer black film that is perfect for black during the day and white illumination at night with white lighting behind it. Is it as bright as a straight white letter? No. Does it look...
  4. Need Help Installing Vista Systems on Glass

We also install vinyl directly behind the sign on glass and haven't had this issue. We only use cast vinyl and those signs are only applied to the vinyl with two sided foam tape. Not VHB tape, tends to have more expansion and contraction then plain old foam tape.
  5. Suggestions Handicap Van Accessible Sign Placement?

Man that layout sucks lol. You really need 4 ft from the curb to have any chance for the sign to survive. Lots of people backing trucks in to spots nowadays but probably not as big of an issue with handicap spots but you never know. I would install that sign on the glass. Cut a piece of...
  6. Laminating 1/4" Acrylic to Brushed Aluminum with 3M 5952 Tape

We do sort of the opposite of what you are doing as in applying thin aluminum to acrylic instead of the other way around. We use 3M 468. Definitely scuff or sand both sides of the material where the tape will end up, clean with alcohol and wipe until dry. We cut both pieces separately and...
  7. Best Practices for Protecting 4x8 Substrates During Customer Pickup

Uline has cardboard corner protectors that work well, seems like most damage is to corners. Only issue is when you try and stack up a bunch of panels with corner protectors on you can tweak panels pretty easy if you are not careful. That and rolls of 1/8" foam sheeting to cover the faces.
  8. suggestions for best way to get white opaque face for face/edge lit channel letter

I'm not sure there is a way to get the edge of 2447 to not look dark when it is not illuminated. I agree that the black back of that film is just making it worse. Does light up nice though! Only option I would consider would be to apply painted aluminum faces to the front of the acrylic. We...
  9. solar power sign cabinet

We have done a few sign cabinets with a solar setup. Purchased kits from Mr. Solar online. They will custom build a setup based on your total wattage and desired illumination time. The controller and batteries will be in a NEMA enclosure that mounts to the pole where you will mount your solar...
  10. White Ink Adhesion

When printing large sheets of back printed acrylic we will spray Grip Guard VPS-1 adhesion promoter on the entire sheet prior to printing. Works great, don't have any issue with chipping when that sheet goes to the router for cutting.
  11. Second surface graphics, adhesive issue on clear acrylic

A couple of things: 1) If you are producing exterior signage with vinyl you need to make sure it is a high performance cast vinyl. The dual view vinyl Signs 365 sells is double sided window graphics with a low tack removable adhesive so hopefully you are not using that and you are just mixed...
  12. White or Clear acrylic for push through.

We have used both extensively. We have used 7328 1/2" white for letters and it works great but it does look different than clear with white translucent vinyl faces. 7328 white is much less bright and you get some darker shadows around the edges and corners. Doesn't look bad, just different...
  13. Replicate existing dimensional letters - CURIOUS

With that thin of a stroke I would do either flat cut or cast aluminum, especially if they are on standoffs as they are in this application. Looks to me like those are a cast product, you can see the slight bevel on the edge and they are probably around 3/4" thick with isn't real cost effective...
  14. Brass Plaque source?

Looks like AlumaMark satin brass or satin bronze material with vinyl graphics. One of the brands Johnson Plastics carries. It could be a solid metal piece like a kick plate someone mentioned or a metal laminate from Wilson Art but those are big sheets and expensive. Seems hard to justify...
  15. Next CNC Router... suggestions please.

Our very first piece of CNC equipment was an AXYZ 4008 router. Basic, no tool changer, mist system for aluminum cutting. It was a decent machine, didn't have a lot of problems with it. Not very fast but it was pretty old tech as far as routers go. Their new machines look really nice and I...
