I need help....I have a decal design where I have a background that is in the shape of a steer skull. In front of that I have text going across, some of which sticks out past the edge of the skull. I want to contour cut around the OUTSIDE of the design. How do I do this???

In Illustrator, someone sent me a vector decal design with some sort of an expanded outline on the words and design. For example, if it said 'Hello', there would be the normal fill and then about a 1/2" of yellow outline. I cannot select it without moving the word out of the way. Once I get it...
