    Not sure if this makes a difference but I always apply the CutContour color value to a 1pt stroke to be cut.

    Also, check to make sure that you have the "Roland VersaWorks" swatches in the Swatches folder of Illustrator.

    You said you saved it as a pdf? Check to make sure the "ContourCut" is still a spot color. It must be saved as an .eps with the Versaworks ContourCut spot color for the stroke color at 1pt.
