That's referred to as 'stacked stone', fyi. Pads won't really do any good. It just takes a level and some patience. Post for reference: click

  6. TX Bosch Cordless 18v Grinder, Band Saw, Impact, Vacuum

Gino I guess I would describe it as an evolution. I try to obtain the tools that will work best for my line of work plus I'm just really into tools. Cordless tools have in many cases caught up with or even exceeded the abilities of corded tools. Name a corded power tool (drill, saw, etc.), and...
  7. TX Bosch Cordless 18v Grinder, Band Saw, Impact, Vacuum

I need to thin down battery platforms. With what I have invested in Flexvolt stuff, I'm clearing these out and replacing with DeWalt. All tools are lightly used. Vacuum is a bit scratched up but works perfectly. Prices are firm and include shipping to the lower 48: Grinder: SOLD Band Saw...
  8. French Cleats

My two cents: Masonry surfaces aren't always perfectly smooth. French cleats don't work too great if the surface has irregularities or is uneven. If it were me, I would just cut a few keyholes in the .090" aluminum. Make a pattern of the keyholes and use screws and anchors in the block. That...

  11. Gemini Lettering on uneven surface

The best way I've found is to: 1.) Take an awl and push it through the paper pattern where each stud placement is marked. Make a hole just large enough to put the tip of a Sharpie through. 2.) Tape your pattern in place. Take a Sharpie or marker of contrasting color to the stone and mark every...

Johnny Best No, I'm not hurting his business. They're a large electrical sign company, I'm a one-man show for the most part.
  13. Speaking of Electrical Licenses...

I know who reported me, I know his name and that he's the VP of a large local sign company. It doesn't really bother me - he's within his rights to do so. It was more ironic than anything because 1) I forgot the photo was even on my site and 2) I have zero interest in installing electrical...
  14. Speaking of Electrical Licenses...

Odd timing on the other post discussing electrical licenses, but here's the back story on why I was recently speaking to the TDLR: In October of 2013, I (along with a friend who has been a Master Sign Electrician for over 25 years) installed a set of 10" LED-illuminated letters. When I quoted...
  15. Electric license needed?

Yeah, I guess it's who you talk to. I talked to Rudy. The conversation basically went like this: Me: My understanding from a previous conversation with a TDLR inspector was that you can't even slide a face out and replace it, regardless of size, if the sign is internally illuminated. Rudy...
  16. Electric license needed?

I agree 100% The way it was explained to me was that if I'm exposing the internals of the sign, I should be qualified to note & repair potentially dangerous issues but also be able to perform repairs if something unforeseen were to happen while changing a face. If there are hanging wires, GTO...
  17. Electric license needed?

About a month ago, an inspector at TDLR told me you DO need to be licensed to change a face in an illuminated sign. I was told the same thing about 5 years ago by a different TDLR inspector. TDLR regulates the entire State of Texas. Municipalities don't supersede TDLR and permitting has nothing...

I'll be there in October if it can wait that long...might be able to fit it in.
  19. Silicone Failure, please make suggestions on what you use

Silicone is typically a poor choice for plastics, acrylics, etc. Lexel is far superior and worth every penny. It etches into plastic, acrylic, etc. and basically 'welds' into it.
  20. Cover Window Mullions

It's not particularly difficult and in a lot of cases it makes it look pretty good. I've done it a few times - below is one example. The mullions on these particular windows are pretty shallow, but even with deeper ones, it provides a more 'complete' look in many cases.
