Why go for high maintenance? I'd skip the vinyl and just paint...and then do something textured to look like real clapboard siding...or any other material.

Nobody has mentioned the walls yet, but the bad one is on vinyl siding, which absorbs and retains heat more so than the concrete block. Block has the ability to dissipate the heat better.

Funny you should mention it. I've literally cut thousands of magnetic photo frames and business cards when I had a home-based foil stamping business. I used a photo frame mat cutter. I've attached a link here, but you can find them on ebay. Simply score the magnet (top side vinyl) and then...
A couple of additional reasons:
- Competition: manufacturers are always in need of outdoing their competition in order to survive in the marketplace, hence the ever changing models.
- New and cheaper technology is making the "old ways" of doing things obsolete.
