Try tightening up the line pitch a little more.
How clean is your calendered material? Your print head may be picking up debris on the material. Try cast vinyl. You'll get much better results unless it is a pixel going bad on the print head.
If you want to use hotter inks I'd suggest looking at the Mimaki line rather than a Roland conversion. Unless you need a printer/cutter combo machine.
Give Barry a shout at printingdigital.net, he had a similar Roland setup with a bulk inks system.

The Roland SP300V and the 540V are great entry level printers.
I haven't seen a negative thread started about either model on any of the sign forums.:thumb: Choosing the size of the printer is something only you can decide.
