At the last place I worked we had an EdgeFX that would randomly start acting funky like this.
The way I found to cure it was to turn off BOTH the computer AND the Edge at the same time for a minute. After restarting, both were happy again.
The Edge (1&2) here never seem to do this.
There "should" be 4 different brushes in the pallette, some have different ends.
The bottom one does not have the white background behind it, and does not show breaks at larger stroke widths.
However, if you overlap you'll have to do some manual hiding.

Creative Banner Assemblies sells a decent cheap retractor, I think it's about 32" wide. (they sell them in sets of 6 I think)
Anything from regular banner to specialty "flat" materials will work in them as long as you can roll the material up on the spool and double-sided tape will hold them.
