Uv unwrapping Works great from my experience as it generates UV maps.. Remember you're working from 3d scan data, digitally painting the desired area and then extracting the 2d representation of that using the UV unwrap which most 3d design packages can do.

Forgot to add.. For this scenario - first paint each section a different colour, then when you unwrap it you know how to cut everything. Once you've done that you can do the actual design. Then simply overlay your cuts in signlab, etc.
Best thing I do is scan the item in with a 3d scanner, use mudbox or similar to "paint" - then do a uv unwrap in the same program to flatten it. That way any distortion is taken care of and it's easy to design.. Plus.. It's a lot cheaper than exact flat for everything.

Try disconnecting the cables from 1 and see if it moves freely. If you've got a mains detector pen, it can help see if there's ac ripple on dc lines

Most of the 408s I've seen have been upgraded with ball nuts, some still use acme thread screws - these use a 2 part nut with a spring to remove backlash. It basically pushes both parts apart to take out play..
What would you might have is debris in the nut, or the spring might have lost...

Tbh most things are "relatively" Simple.
The nut should run very smoothly.. Ball nuts have a propensity to collect gunk - quite a few YouTube videos on how to clean and reassemble. Likewise linear bearings work in the same way.
