Another thing to keep in the back of your mind for when things don't happen quite how they should is the reduce nodes button.
You have to select all nodes on a path but clicking the button next the the reduce node(or CTRL+A or drag a marquee around the shape) then click reduce nodes.

I would draw a line to represent the curve you want to follow then select the path text tool which is in your toolbox. Click and hold the text tool to reveal the text tool flyout and in this flyout you will see a T at 45 deg like it is falling over.

I used to try loads of different solutions before I came across the reverse curve solution.
It is the easiest once you get the hang of it
Also, instead of breaking apart a complex object containing many subpaths just to work on one wayward subpath, you can use the 'extract subpath' button two...
Using the shape tool (F10) select the offending object and click on the 'Reverse Curve Direction' button in the tool bar. (it looks like two curved arrows, one pointing up and the other down)
Now combine the objects or back minus front which ever you normally do

The problem is that most of the vectorizing jobs I do come in at a lot less that the cost of buying a font I will most likely only use once.

It is usually for a vectorization job where I need one or two words to re-draw a logo and then it is on to the next one. I may never use that font again.

I vectorize dozens of images everyday and in order to do that I need to do them fast.
If I can get a font identified or a couple of words typeset it means I can get the logos of to my clients faster
