  1. New logo designs

Agree about the JJ's being hard to read. Possibly have them in front of the smoke. I think I would also smooth out the color contrast in the lettering to more of a smoother gradient, seems a little drastic to me.
  2. ...and you complained about your ride to work today

How some people commute. Cool. http://www.rd.com/slideshows/the-worlds-most-outrageous-commutes/#slideshow=slide1
  3. new photoshop

Adobe just announced their latest release of photoshop. Can't believe Corel Photopaint is still bundled with CorelDraw at no extra charge and can do virtually the same. Of course Photoshop is Adobe's cash cow. I just wonder what other features can be added over the years, it seems there...
  4. Scrap Vinyl

I've given my stuff to a few day care centers and a couple of school teachers. They would usually just come and get everything I had. They told me the kids love making stuff like their initials and sticking them on stuff.
  5. When to charge for a sign layout and when to charge for a logo design?

I think sometimes we feel a "logo" has to be something we've drawn, or created ourselves with much time and labor involved. A "logo" could be nothing more than a particular font for a business name (think Coca Cola, UCLA university, Cal University, Microsoft, Google, Oracal, etc). There is no...
  6. Source for die cut mags?

Ditto on Supersigns.biz, they do great work. Also they're merchant members here, that should count for something.
  7. MDO Edges

Primer and paint always worked for me. I would take the extra step of hand sanding the primer coat and knock the sharp angle off the edges. If the paint is going to fail it's going to be there.
  8. forgot how crummy this logo looked

Got a friend in London who sent me some Olympic hats and tshirts. Man, I forgot how ugly this logo looked. Would love to know what they paid for this piece of junk. I can hear it now if I had designed it " Your number 2s don't match!!!!!"
  9. Changeable Letters?

Gemini sells the .060 thick if that's what you mean by "expensive". Show the customer the price in the catalog, you get to knock 40% off. I figure $30 - $40 ups charges on top of that. You'll make a few dollars off the sale.
  10. what would you do serious question

I had a similar situation while back. Customer gave me a deposit on a large lighted cabinet and pan face, he later went to another sign shop referred to him by a friend of his. They still had the old cabinet from where the business had gone belly up. He calls me on the phone, telling me he...
  11. Peyton manning to denver

Couple of things I would be worried about.... How will his neck hold up. Maybe the referees can handle that end of it. Playing in the cold and wind of Denver. Also, will the coaches let him call the plays on the field? I heard he's wanting 5 years at $20 mil each year. Will be cool...
  12. Install Large Graphics Solo

I love it when people tell me the way I've been doing for 20+ years is wrong and I need to be in another business. As long as the end result is the same, what's the difference?
  13. Install Large Graphics Solo

I recently installed Oracal 651 vinyl on some storefront windows. Vinyl panels that I applied were 24" x 96". Customer wanted to black out the windows. I used soapy water. Laid the vinyl face down on a board across two sawhorses, pulled the release liner off as I soaked the vinyl every foot...
  14. PayPal debit card question/rant

Might as well get used to it. The big boy banks have taken a hit on credit card balances, they're doing all they can think of to get a few extra bucks.
  15. Sign Install without drilling through the face

3' x 10' is a lot of weight and a lot of stress on any sign. Since you're installing on 2 x 4s I would countersink screws and fill the holes with decorative rosettes or caps like you see old Norm Abrams use in his furniture construction. Once painted they would be virtually invisible. I would...
  16. When it too much, too much?

http://www.today.ucla.edu/portal/ut/041026news_new-logo.aspx Tell her to call these guys, they only charged UCLA $90,000 for their updated logo. They would probably go down to around $85,000 for her. http://www.signs101.com/forums/images/smilies/ROFLMAO.gif
  17. Has this happened to anyone?

Second that on Fellers. Never had a complaint with them, of course if Frank sees this he may start shipping out toilet paper with his picture on every 1.25 squares!!!
  18. Has this happened to anyone?

I don't know what direction to go on this one.
  19. Gerber Maxx and Odyssey plotters

Looking thru some old sign magazines and came across ads for Gerber Odyssey plotters and Gerber Maxx printers. Odyssey claimed you couldn't load vinyl incorrectly, it would automotically correct any skewing. Maxx printer was supposed to be Gerber's venture into big thermal one piece...
  20. Using the Roland GX-24 as a plotter

Masking tape and a pencil is what I used, never did many patterns, but the harder lead would last a pretty good while.
