  1. New Vinyl Requirments Coming

Just wonderful, like all the paint reformulations that reduce the life by years, or hell, try to get anything chrome plated with any quality, used to last for decades, now you're seeing failures in a year or two. The EPA has just about killed trucking, that's forcing costs up dramatically, and...
  2. how to keep razor blade marks out of paint???

Last conspicuity tape I did, I slit the backing an inch from the end and left it on, slid a dollar tree metal ruler (cork on the back) under the end where I needed to cut and just went to town with a #11 blade, then pulled the thin strip off the back and finished the application. edit: remember...
  3. What are you using to clean the glass for vinyl?

Cleans and polishes may have buffed the surface and removed the receptive tooth the material had to begin with, PVC being softer than glass.... same reason you don't cut and polish with a buffer before the next coat of paint, you only take it to (insert preference here) grit.
  4. how to keep razor blade marks out of paint???

Couple tips I picked up when doing prep and tape for a high dollar bike painter; I always use brand new single edge razors, just like the type you buy in cards of 100 from Lowes. Use one for a few minutes, switch end to end, then after a few minutes more, toss it. A brand new blade cuts nice...
  5. 4'x6' Diamond (Orajet 3651) on rivet-less trailer - wet or dry?

I love to apply wet and am an avid RapidTac user. Call it a crutch, but for a couple cents per job it goes nice and smooth and prevents embarrassments (being in Florida, with the wind and bugs, and on-site installs, it gets interesting at times). I can do dry, occasionally do without issue, but...
  6. How do I get the average Joe to understand about high quality artwork?!!!!!

Well, here's how I explain it (read it like a dialog with customer nodding their head): There's two types of graphics, vector and raster, ok? Ok, now, raster is what you see all over the internet and on your computer screen, it's made of pixels, which are just little squares of color, ok? Ok...
  7. It's not just the newbies for me...

Valid point, the correlation from my perspective was a similar group of folks starting out with ambition, but perhaps not mommy and daddy's money for college. Some hazing or slights should be weathered by anyone hoping to succeed anywhere, but you've got to admit that some of the responses can...
  8. It's not just the newbies for me...

Very valid point Bill, and yes, tough skin is needed and many of the folks catching most of it probably wouldn't reach that level even with handholding and talking about their feelings over milk and cookies, but as a college professor teaching web design and development (not going to say where...
  9. It's not just the newbies for me...

Nothing leaves without at least one kerning adjustment... pet peeve and bugs me more than any other simple design mistake when I see it. Regarding crappy files/artwork, I gave up on most of the unwinnable battles years ago, "beauty is in the eye of the cardholder"
  10. It's not just the newbies for me...

A 'newbie's perspective... When I joined and started posting, I was nothing but enthusiastic, just bought a shop in a box from eBay, not knowing my arse from a hole in the ground. I've worked in the design field for years, and also teach design, but of the web variety, and more development...
  11. Do you care if your suppliers become your competitors?

To the point it runs folks out of business...? but I guess since they're not working from their houses or doing it part time, it's ok?
  12. Do you care if your suppliers become your competitors?

We're not too big yet, so it's not a huge topic, but I did lose out one lucrative opportunity because the supplier of an item to a company bought an eBay import cheapie machine and started doing them in his livingroom. Because we'd have to get the item from them, and he can get them...
  13. How long is a quote/estimate good for at your shop?

It's the months later "why did you give me a new quote, you already gave me a quote" that I am trying to cover, just a little CYA bit telling them a time limit so I have paperwork to back up a new quote.
  14. How long is a quote/estimate good for at your shop?

It's not the fixed expenses, we're fairly under control with that, hourly rate is where I'm comfortable and I don't see a need to alter that like some others in the area like to do at random. The materials is mostly where it comes in, lots of prices are set to change in the near future...
  15. Should USCUtter accept Bitcoin payments?

This forum really needs a LIKE button on the posts enabled :)
  16. How long is a quote/estimate good for at your shop?

Not that we're constantly jacking up prices, but costs do change over time. Do your estimates have a note included with a 'quoted price is valid through' or other indication of a timeframe and if so, what timeframe do you use? I have one looming that was quoted out early last fall, I did not...
  17. Also need a critique of my new website.

Few items jump out initially: The text in the page starts out with Welcome!Welcome to The Sign Company of Dallas! The Sign Company of Irving has continuously Is it 'of Dallas' or 'of Irving' The end of the page has the post from the other day about Acrylic signs... valid discussion point...
  18. Knifeless tape and combinations...

I'll definitely come back and post after the job. The owner decided to wait until after bike week, wanted to have some cash on hand, so it'll probably be a couple weeks. I may order some of the 352 as well and give it a shot, but after talking with him again, there are a couple areas he wanted...
  19. Knifeless tape and combinations...

This one is a fairing, tank, side covers and bags on a brand new HD... if it works out, there are many other opportunities in the same family for bikes, trucks, etc. I got the ask after the guy's wife asked for her bike to be pinstriped but didn't want to commit to paint, I did a combination of...
  20. Knifeless tape and combinations...

I think you just saved me a day of frustration and more than a couple dollars... I know someone will mention it, but running green tape, making the cuts with a razor is not possible, the customer is too insistent that no blades are used, won't let me do it unless I promise. I wonder if the...
