Am I missing something ?

My Roland VP540 sometimes will print a large job without doing an automatic clean during process and the print quality goes down. Any idea of why the automatic clean isn't doing its job ? Thanks.

Check your periodic cleaning setting in the sub-menu. See that it's not turned off.
