Yes they are. These guys amaze me. I would like to lay out 100 fonts sometime and see how many they could get.

What you should realize is that I was, at one time, a type dealer and also co-authored and published in 1993 the first program to identify an unknown type sample through automated means.

Where that is the science of it, the art of it only comes through lots of experience and general education about the history of type.
