It's still a thing. Windows allows hardware mfgrs to install apps for their devices, and the sneaky part is that since it's device based they don't always show up in your start-up apps to disable it, or even know they're there.
You can disable it through the Group Policy Editor if you have Pro, or on any version you can go to View Advanced System Settings (access by clicking start and start typing advanced system settings)\ click hardware tab\ click device installation settings\ when you see the option to automatically download manufacturers apps, select "no". You may have to check for updated software for devices manually by disabling it. It's a pain either way, you risk the bloatware, or have to check for updates on everything. LG isn't the only one either, certain desktop printers also install ad based software to sell you inks & stuff.

I used to remember software coming on external HDs for Win/Mac, but they were always opt in (I just deleted it, I wanted all that the drive could give me, but I digress). I reckon now they are going to install once plugged in to one of those OSs.
While I can understand, due to the limits of Windows itself, of having software that adds supposedly more control (not ads, if it's doing ads that just a joke of a software), but that should still be opt in for those that may want it or not have it for those that don't. I tend not to like bloat, why I install vanilla Arch from the CLI (yes, yes, I had to get Arch in there, I use Arch by the way).
In my opinion, this makes things a joke (a security problem joke, but a joke nonetheless). Yet another reason why perpetually connected software/hardware isn't always the best thing. Its a mess.
We have an LG monitor and this has never happened. A single report from a single user sounds like FUD to me. I think the more likely scenario is that they installed the software themselves and didn't catch that unless you uncheck the box you're getting Mcafee downloaded and installed.

Why would MS have to ask LG to disable this if it was actually user error. I think I read somewhere that the Update Policy allows for UWP apps to do this as well, why I think MS had to go to LG to stop this.
Also, this may not actually affect all LG models, maybe only recently made ones or some other specific condition. But it does seem to be beyond one.

Maybe different model(s) were affected. Maybe there are some permissions in your setup somewhere that the others didn't have or vice versa. I can only imagine that some things like this (or something along these lines) are going to become more of the norm. As much as I like my tech, it is being stretched thin to where I want to go back to a more analog time.
