BN20 - Second Hand - Yellow not printing issue.

Hi everyone, first post.

I recently bought a second hand BN20 for quite cheap, apparently he took the inks out before turning off the machine but me being a moron, didn't ask if he flushed the system.

On the first test this was the outcome: 54999.jpg

No yellow showing at all.
After several head soaks, cleanings and pumping the lines with a syringe this is now the current test.

After looking at the lines it seems that the left side of the yellow is just not pumping ink as I can see it's empty.
Right side yellow line is full but only printing slight bits of yellow.

Personally I'm leaning towards a new captop or a damper, worst outcome would obviously be a new head.

Anyone else have any ideas on the issue?

With everything you have done so far is probably time for a new head. Quite possibly why he sold it cheap! You can try new captop and dampers ( only use OEM Roland ones, not cheap chinese copies as the DX7 head doesn't like the cheap ones ) and see if it improves. If you replace the head you will need to replace these anyway, so it's worth a try.
unfortumately with the BN20 once you add in the cost of the dampers, captop and head, you are better off just buying a fully working one

Ah bugger, unfortunately I couldn't really get a brand new one which is why I took the chance for this one. I take the blame of course as I should have asked more questions.
Got it for £400.
How much are the new heads / labour normally?

If you need someone to fit it for you you are looking at around £2500+ for everything to get it back up and running properly

Sorry to nudge again. Just noticed this, the yellow at that bit doesn't seem to budge, maybe blocked?
It does seem to show a tiny tiny bit of movement which throws me off

Asi estaba un cabezal DX7 en un plóter ecosolvente en dónde trabajo no salía el amarillo y era que ya el cabezal estaba malo

That can be from a partially blocked head, damper or manifold if it is moving a little bit.

So, tried a new captop. Still no movement on that one yellow.
How would one fix the manifold?
I think I'm attempting a damper next.
Slowly looking likes it's the head that's blocked, just so weird that it's only one side of the yellow and the others a fine... you'd assume they'd all be bad or damaged since it was left, not just the yellow.

You can't repair the manifold you need to replace it. Heads will often just block on one side, this can be from a bad captop that isn't sealing against the head, and sometimes just completely random.

Ahhh okay fair enough.
After reconnecting the lines to the damper again I've noticed now the left side magenta that's connected to the yellow isn't pulling after doing 2 cleans when it was looking great before.
Does this now mean more towards a damper / sealing issue?

sorry for all the questions, just found that quite strange

It could be. It's worth trying an OEM damper and checking the alignment and sealing when you fit it. It's often hard to pinpoint faults as they can be due to a few different things or a combination of them

You can try sucking at the captop with a syringe.(Of course you need to close the second tube, while sucking on the first)
Don't suck too hard, or you could delaminate the nozzle plate. You should see the ink moving now and after the air is out of the ink lines, there shouldnt be much foam in the syringe. If foamy ink keeps coming, the cap is not sealing correctly, or you have a leak farther up.( It's unlikely, that the manyfold starts leaking, without someone played around with it.)

Bumping with new findings.
Captop replaced, did nothing
Damper replaced and I'm finding signs of life, is this looking good or optimistic as least?
I'm doing a few more head soaks as well.

I would say not really. You can try more overnight soaks and it 'may' clear up, but is looking more like a seriously clogged head, and it will never give decent print like that

At this point though it isnt going to hurt doing more head soaks and powerful cleans as they aren't likely to make it worse, and don't cost anything so is worth a go
