Brick Sign estimate

A rep from this city requested an estimate for build another sign "just like this one". I just received an estimate for building the flowerbed wall and the main sign structure. They told me $9100, just for labor, to pour the footer and lay the brick. After going back and forth a couple times, the builder told me that the columns would be hollow: the brick would be stacked as a shell, no internal structure. Is this legit? And yes I realize the lettering on this one looks like someone's cross-eyed nephew tried to install some generic Gemini letters. I also mentioned to the customer that their lettering is terribly crowded. All I will be doing is coordinating it, and installing the letters. Thanks

:p This looks like the sign that one of my customers decided to make himself. I cringe every time I pass by it...crowded letters, misaligned baseline, etc. Makes my eyes water.

Personally I would've blurred out the letters before sharing those pictures..........I bet you would have had a lot more useful feedback. Those letters are just horrible!

Sorry I can't help with the structural parts, but please make sure they don't get their hands on the new letters.

Looks like somebody missed class the day they talked about baselines and descenders.

Take a closer look. The "o" and "e"s don't even break the baseline.

So ideally, have them poor the footer with a pole or jbolts in place for you, but hold off on the brick work until after the sign is installed. Funny thing with brick, you can brick around any goddang shape, you can make a sign to fit any shape, but you cannot brick to a spec'd size and build to a spec'd size and expect the two to be the same. Much easier to have the brick layers dress up a cabinet than to build a cabinet to fit.

Most brick masons do not like small jobs like this. They're easy to underbid. For 30,000 brick they can often just give you a per brick price. Little jobs make them think too hard. But some enjoy it. Some bricklayers build corners that can eliminate the use of a brick saw, too.
Hollow columns are common. But some will fill with whatever, and add a cap. But they can add a cap without fill, too.
I think most of them prefer that your sign is installed (for example, on posts) before they brick, or have the sign in hand as they build. But they always told me they can do either way. If you install after they are completely done, you can run into issues with a perfect fit, and you can knock some fresh bricks loose if you are too aggressive with a hammer drill.

On the design, make your measurements in multiples of four inches for the bricks.

I got a brick guy that would do this. First off the columns would not be hollow, they would be built with block (at least down here they would) with some damn fine footings. judging by back pic this sign does have some block on it and it would have to have some block inside

Secondly (not that you asked the damn columns are too big for the sign, it look ridiculous. Either make the sign part larger or reduce the column size. It looks like some took letter off another sign and showved it onto this one lol

if it were my job I would have all brickwork done and then come in and attach sign inside brickwork on background, such as .063 aluminum.
