calibration test print-wtf?

Roland SC-540V,
I was getting some banding, none of the usual fixes are working.
So I do a Calibration test print and get what you see in the picture.

Normally those boxes should be within millimeters of each other,
I'm really at a loss here, what am I missing?

I don't have the same printer as you. However I have had similar oddities with mine.
My problem was the head height. It was too far from the media. My printer has a few different head positioning heights for varied media thickness... if yours does, check that... could be simple.

Head height is on low.
Did the turn off and reboot.
Opened the machine up and made sure all cables and connections are tight, made sure the heads are not loose.

regular test print is OK, all colors firing, everything aligned.

Calibration test print was a red herring.

Regular old test print showed the black head has major issues, did the cleaning, drawing ink with syringe, swapping the cables, etc...

Need a new head.

I think..

You miss one step. Those two squares are made from 2 passes each. But you miss one step. Check out the dampers and the cap top.
