Calling ILLUSTRATOR Experts:: Problem with Distort...

So I've had this problem SEVERAL times before and somehow get around it by pushing random buttons until it works -- but i want to know REALLY how to deal with this:

Here's what I did -- Typed "METZLER", then Free Distort.... Then added "stroke," followed by outlining the stroke. But in the picture below here's what I end up with.

For some reason, the blue dots and lines NEVER follow the actual Distort (Or envelope distort>make with top object if I do it that way). How do I "reset" the blue lines in the picture to follow the actual grey lettering that's shown?!

It'sdriving me nuts and I have to have this vinyl done by tomorrow

After you've done your distort ... click on "Expand Appearance" in the Edit tab.
