So I’ve installed a new carriage cable and guides on my SP540V and the gap at the curl looks identical to the illustration in the service manual. But at about a foot after leaving the cap station the top guide separates from the cable and bottom guide, then they all start to flop about. It’s as if the bottom guide doesn’t want to slide along the channel but the surface feels very smooth. I’ve tried tightening and loosening the cable with no better result. I don’t think the cable is moving inside the guides as it works because the gap doesn’t change after use.
To be clear, it does work for awhile but then eventually binds up, so now I’m wondering if the cable has not just become too kinked to function.
To avoid replacing the cable again, I’m considering binding the cable and guides together about a foot from the carriage in an effort to keep them from separating and hopefully force them to travel down the channel more smoothly. Just wondered if anyone else had tried this.
