It's really nothing new though. Web TV and similar "internet appliances" have been tried back in the 80's and 90's without much success. Now that high speed internet is widely available, perhaps they will take hold this time?
It would be nice to have an alternative OS, I do find it troublesome considering the amount of data-mining google is doing. CNBC is doing a story on google next week and I'll be watching it...
