Contour cut question....

I have always used Flexisign for design and prepress. We print on a Roland and use Versaworks for the production management.

I have started using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop more and need to know how to add a contour cut line for Versaworks to recognize. In Flexisign I simply add a contour cut and Flexi makes it the correct color for Versaworks to see as a contour cut line. In Illustrator, do I need to mimic the same color (CMYK value) or is it the name of the color Versaworks is "looking" for to see it as a contour cut line? OR am I way off with my thinking?

The name of the color is the linkage point, and not the color itself. The color needs to be a Spot Color, and have the name CutContour. Flexi typically creates a gray color, other color palates use a 100 percent magenta color, and either is fine, as the linkage is not based on the color itself, but rather the name of the spot color.

If I am not mistaken, versa works has thier own color chart embeded in the program. You should be able to locate it and import the color chart into Illustrator. Thats how I did it in Coreldraw

Another important issue in AI is the thickness of the stroke and limit. .25 and 1x limit are the standard and we usually make sure the contour cut is up on the highest layer.

Thank You...

I thank everyone for their information. I am sure I will be asking more about workflow to print/cut with Adobe products.
