Convert file to CS4

I just got a file from a customer that need to be saved down to CS4... possibly... I was able to save the file as an .eps and open in illustrator. The background image is flattened though, wondering is someone could open the file to see if the background is editable when opened in a newer version... If so then I would need the file saved down to CS4, if not I'll have to re-create the background. Anyone willing to help me out?
